it asks you some very basic dota questions like what your favorite heroes and how much money and kills you usually accumulate in a game.

Tricky, as I know bugger all about Dota. I've signed up for this on Valve fanboy status alone .

Same. I was kinda annoyed that they didn't actually just include a "I've never played a DOTA style game before" option. I watched the DOTA 2 debut tournament videos and understood absolutely nothing about them, except I guess the Diablo-esque elements of running around with a dude controlled by the mouse and hitting things. The commenters were throwing out weird unknown terms about strategy and game state left and right.

I got a beta key and so far it has been great playing it. very nostalgic. I do however have a couple of complaints but they are fairly minor.

Anyone else got a key that wants to play with me?

i also got a beta key (and used it), so if anyone wants to play hit me up. but holy shit it is slow compared to heroes of newerth

Have you ever played LoL? If so, how slow is Valve's DOTA compared to it? I remember giving up on that game after a few minutes because it was too slow for my taste.

This = best DOTA mod ever

Funny thing, I got a copy of DOTA 2 for doing the Rise of the Immortals achievement. Can't really seem to get into this though. The controls just don't seem to make sense to me, must not be doing it right.

put one hand on the mouse, the other hand around the general qwerty area.

then right click on the mouse anywhere and your champion/hero will go there. Right click on an enemy and you will go to it and start attacking. left click any object and you can see its info in the down right corner.

click q, w, e, or r to use the abilities. If you dont like how the keys are set up you can rebind keys in the options.

How is this not sensible? Its like this in warcraft, starcraft, diablo, WoW, any other rts/mmo ive ever played that has heroes with abilities. I need to know what specifically didnt make sense to you.

The camera.

I can't seem to lock it to the hero like I could in Rise of the Immortals, and can't find a key for it in the control list. So I have to bounce my left hand between the qwerty area and the arrow keys constantly, because the camera doesn't zoom out very far at all. If the mouse gets to the edge of the screen it scrolls over, but it jerks so hard that I try and avoid it.

Also something that I find ridiculously frustrating is that I can't hold the right mouse button to continue to move in that direction, I have to constantly right click.

Also, I think it's strange that the off-shoots of DOTA have stuck to the RTS style controls when they don't necessarily seem beneficial to the gameplay, but just a hold over from the original mod.
