Chimeray Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 Also I feel like naming the game DOTA2 was a low thing to do. I won't be buying it on principal. Plus the DOTA creators have made LoL and fans have made HoN already. Exactly... This is not the time to be making another DOTA spin-off, or worse... just the same game (if they really are just gonna copy the original!!). I don't understand why they're going through with it, it's like saying... Guys, I know there's HoN and LoL out there, but we're gonna do it better, cos we're Valve... The concept art looks pretty sweet though! And now we're talking: Do not watch, I warned you! Quote

Skjalg Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 This is a little deja vu. Valve does something crazy Everyone hates it on announcement Time goes by Everyone praises Valve for doing it on release Quote
Warby Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 yeah i heared the people behind tf cs dod codename gordon nebaculardrop/portal and alien swarm got treated really badly and didnt enjoy the experience at all ! they all regretted it afterwards ! and would never do it again ! Quote
Campaignjunkie Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 ... Codename Gordon? What's that? Quote
AlexM Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 This is a little deja vu. Valve does something crazy Everyone hates it on announcement Time goes by Everyone praises Valve for doing it on release we'll see, valve has done plenty that I'm still unhappy about such as the SDK, TF2 becoming boring after a week or 2, CSS, SDK (because it's so bad it's worth mentioning twice). I mean, I am/was a valve fanboy, but if you love something it's only right you point out when they are doing something unwise. If I didn't care about the direction Valve takes, then I wouldnt comment on the matter. Quote
Sentura Posted October 16, 2010 Author Report Posted October 16, 2010 This is a little deja vu. Valve does something crazy Everyone hates it on announcement Time goes by Everyone praises Valve for doing it on release hrm? usually valve suckers/fanboys gather to praise at the very first glance of a new product, then yelp like puppies when it's not released on time. it's going to be interesting to see their take on dota (though i suppose it'll be very familiar), but i reckon they'll have a problem introducing the game to the masses. dota is the opposite of casual gaming; i guess it wouldn't be far out to say the complexity of the game was unrivaled by any other game. tutorials and training videos can only do so much, and we'll be likely to see a huge divide between players who can play the game, and players who are fodder. dota has been, and will always be a niche game; hunter s. thompson said it best: "when the going gets weird, the weird turns pro" Is it bad that i've never heard of Dota? insert hp remark about "WHAT HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS" (reference to the goddamn alien(s) thread) Quote
Taylor Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 1) Take RTS 2) Remove 99% of game elements 3) Become most impenetrably complex game ever I always preferred the much older Aeon of Strife levels, that were always hacked. So halfway through the game player one would activate some item or type some key word and suddenly obliterate everything in sight and, while calling the opposite team noobs, try desperately to raze the base before everyone quit. dux Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 HoN would make me and my friends shout at eachother a lot during a game. A lot. A real lot. If we bother with DoTA someone will inevitably get killed. Quote
Skjalg Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 haha yeah dux, that is actually how I divide games (crudely) into two genres. 1. The shout genre 2. The peaceful genre. 10 Years back I absolutely loved the first genre (CS, Quake, and later on DotA), but now I almost never play a game unless it belongs to the second genre. For example, has a 2 player coop against machine, where I can just relax and enjoy myself instead of pretending im paying some elite sport. Quote
Nurb Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 Only Valve would do something like this and actually be able to pull it off. They think outside of the box; that's why they have Steam and a ton of now very valuable IPs. Whether you like it or not, it's the key to all of their success. I think Dota2 is another brilliant move. It's an unexploited but highly valuable IP. I don't know why neither HoN or LoL could (or would?) call their game Dota2 but appaerently Valve can. Kind of evil in a way I guess, but at the same time; both HoN and LoL where made way earlier, and if they didn't see the value in aquiring actual Dota IP name, I feel like it's their own shortcoming. The original name is always the strongest. It's like Coca Cola and Pepsi. Anyway, HoN is complex but lacks accessability. LoL is accessible, but lacks complexity. With L4D and TF2 on their belt, I think Valve can make a truly accessible multiplayer game, but can they retain the complexity and depth of Dota? Neither TF2 of L4D are complex games, and I think this will be the main obstacle for Valve. Quote
Sindwiller Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 Considering that everyone and their cat have already made a DotA clone, I'd say that is a pretty wrong move. Anyway, HoN is complex but lacks accessability. I beg to differ, but there's no point in discussing a competitive game's mechanics, is there? I'm already getting my DotA mojo from HoN. *shrugs* Quote
