Hehe it's still pretty nice to see a real-time rendering in Hammer itself :P

Um, unless I'm missing something, the lighting preview is in no way real-time light rendering. They're just projected shadows and flat coloring, a replacement for the shaded textured view. It was actually kinda disappointing after working with UE4 so much. It might look decent for outdoor Dota 2 maps, but anything else it's extremely plain and not very reliable or accurate. It's still better than nothing, but hopefully this is still pretty alpha and we might see proper lighting later on.

Also the quasi-realtime radiosity is awesome, I didn't see that before. Proper day/night cycles in source 2 makes me happy.

It is the Dota lighting.  I'm pretty sure the editor is an in-engine view.

Actually, I guess you're right. Hammer definitely isn't is in-engine, but it does render accurate Dota lighting, since Dota 2 only uses deferred lighting which doesn't need to be compiled. I was trying to make an indoor scene and realized there were only deferred lights and a light_dynamic. Since deferred lights don't create shadows and the env_global_light doesn't create any sort of global illumination, indoor scenes look balls.

I guess I'm curious what happens next, if they add back in lightmaps, and how they'll handle it in hammer. Because right now hammer doesn't seem set up for that. Or it's possible they'll go all deferred, and add in deferred lights with actual shadows. It's certainly been done in alien swarm already.

Don't ever play Dota 2 with randoms.

Also, I feel an urge to post this as I just learned of its existence:

Oh god... he has a dota video...

This is how I first heard of Ray Sipes:

I casually like to remind JZFB (from faceit / armshousetv) of this song. Feel free to do the same if any of you run into him :D

Hahaha Ray Sipe is a fucking legend. I just can't understand why he keeps doing these videos, it's like he's a teenager who can't get enough attention. Or just a troll, I have no clue. He's one of the seven wonders.
