The mod community isn't dead, it has just changed name and form to "indie games" community.

As tools have become better and cheaper, more and more hobby game developers make their own games on "licensed" engines rather than making a mod. For me it was a very easy choise to purchase Unity (or UDK / Ogre Engine) and create something you can make a profit of instead of creating a mod.

i agree, i was thinking about the exact same thing the other day. i think in the future you'll see more people having indie games on their portfolio. not just because they are easier to make, but also because they are better mediums to showcase ideas than traditional art is.

I don't feel modding is in decline, I think its grown so big you can't get a overview anymore.

Game magazines can easily fill 2 pages every months with good looking mods for varioes games, so I would sertainly not say its worse then 10 years ago :-)

Its true that a whole generation of modders seems to go indie tough :-)

Modding isn't in decline, it's just changing -- it's not the "total conversion" model of modding anymore. People are still doing "map packs" and people are still doing the smaller mods like UI changes / difficulty mods, etc. There are certainly fewer "big" mods out there now, which isn't necessarily bad.

Mods are still here... you're just in the game industry now and you're looking for what you remember, but it's not here anymore. It's turned into something different. :)

These days 90% of the community that want to play mods expect professional quality stuff from mods. If it doesn't look gorgeous they don't care what the gameplay is like, releasing often without some form of auto patching alienates people who aren't used to downloading stuff and manually running updates for games.

Sad state of affairs, not like the good old days.

Truth here. When I went looking for a mod team to join, I ended up on an indie game team. Indie games are the new TCs. Thanks UDK & Unity! :celebrate:

Why mod a game when you can make your own game?

Because Half-life/Unreal/Quake comes with art assets many people don't have the tools or knowledge to make, but they do have the free level editor that came with the game. At least personally it's the real reason I was ever into mods- because it was something as an amateur I could actually do.

Edit: I agree with campaignjunky. While big total conversions are shrinking because the standards for them kept getting higher and higher, there's still lots of people making custom levels for tf2, UMC maps in SC2, stuff for Oblivion and Fallout 3, etc. Actually, the Bethesda games seems to me to be one of the single biggest modding communities, there's thousands of things on the Nexus sites. It's insane how much stuff gets made for those games.
