luque Posted May 22, 2010 Report Posted May 22, 2010 Hello everyone, Im Luuk 21 years old and busy with level design for about 1 year now. Recently I have finished my portfolio and would like to know what you guys think about it. Some of the screenshots at the work section are placeholders as I still have to make some new ones of Classified. http://www.luukwaarbroek.com Feedback would be appreciated! Kind regards Luuk ps: I've also got a question about showing level designs. Ive checked a lot of the portfolios on this website and all I see are finished nice and shiny screenshots of the levels. But don't recruiters/companies want to know the DESIGN about a level? That means level design docs, layouts, topviews, mockups etc. Quote
Campaignjunkie Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 "Home" page is unnecessary. Have your index set to your "work" page by default so it's the first thing people see. In your resume section, are these commercial projects or mods or what? You worked on them in school, but it's for a studio? Might want to clarify that. Umm you certainly look competent, but what are you really interested in? What kind of scripted events have you done? I think Andrew Weldon's portfolio offers a good example of how to present your scripts -- http://www.button-masher.net/content.php?c=86 If none of this stuff is freely downloadable / playable, you have to work a lot harder to demonstrate your contributions to these projects. What kinds of problems did you encounter and how did you solve them? Who made the level assets? What constraints were you working under? In terms of gameplay, I was most interested in that bioblocks game, but it wasn't playable so that was kind of a big turn-off (Disclaimer -- I'm not a professional. Just a cranky amateur who's been modding for a long long long time.) Quote
luque Posted May 24, 2010 Author Report Posted May 24, 2010 ok thanks for the feedback, I will try and clarify things a bit on the website. Quote
PhilipK Posted May 25, 2010 Report Posted May 25, 2010 Agreed with CJ about presenting your work at the index page instead. I'm not a big fan of having news/blog stuff at the same page as your portfolio stuff, or not having news sections on the same actual page as your screenshots. But that's just personal taste. You've got some nice stuff there judging from the screens and it's always nice to have some videos of your work. I think the things I would have changed is to scale down everything that isn't directly related to your actual work or resumé. Maybe put the Bio, resumé and conact section all on one page could work? Otherwise, clean and nice layout and nice work pieces. Quote
ElectroSheep Posted May 25, 2010 Report Posted May 25, 2010 In exemple, you can gain some uselles page by put your contact on the resume page or on the right sidebar if you want your contact info always visible. Quote
luque Posted March 20, 2011 Author Report Posted March 20, 2011 Did a huuuuuuuge revamp of my portfolio http://www.luukwaarbroek.com/ Changes * Removed blog, bio, about and contact pages * Home page now only shows big images of projects I'm most proud of * Clicking on one of those images will take you to the project page and give more info about it * Updated resume * Made big layout changes, now its far more simplistic Getting ready to apply to some big studios in about 5 months, know anything I can improve? Shout! Crits on work, website, resume etc. are more then welcome! Quote
Vilham Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 Looks great tbh, I didn't notice any text explaining any of the design in the layout shots though. Quote
luque Posted March 22, 2011 Author Report Posted March 22, 2011 81 visits from mapcore and one crit, it cant be that good Quote
Furyo Posted March 25, 2011 Report Posted March 25, 2011 Rename "home" to "Games" or "Work" Seen as Gatling Gears doesn't exactly fall in the famous games category, I would work on presenting it in a stronger light, separating it from your personal projects (look at my website for a clear distinction for instance) as you need to show that you have some pro experience already, and aren't just a student looking for a position. luque Posted March 29, 2011 Author Report Posted March 29, 2011 Thanks for the comments, I'll look into it Quote
