ElectroSheep Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 Video games are not art because the end product is not art: that is all. Quote
Steppenwolf Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 Imo the people who don't consider video games art look at them from the wrong perspective. Most games will never be art exclusivly. Games are always many things at the same time and art is just one them. Why did the wrong movie critic have to die? As a matter of fact Roger Ebert is dieing. Already lost his lower jaw due to cancer. Quote
Taylor Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 I side with the "I don't care" crowd as they are by far the least annoying. Quote
Campaignjunkie Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 It's a shame this generation's going to remember Ebert as "that old guy who makes statements about games without playing them" -- he's actually a pretty good movie critic and spearheaded the movement into making movie criticism into something everyone can enjoy and engage in. I'm just going to remember him by his reviewing philosophy, basically "judge a movie by what it's trying to do." It's really informed how I see and enjoy games. Quote
Serenius Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 Why did the wrong movie critic have to die? As a matter of fact Roger Ebert is dieing. Already lost his lower jaw due to cancer. You're trying to make me feel bad about my insensitive post on the internet, aren't you? Quote
⌐■_■ Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 the reason why she puts that effort into convincing people games are art isn't really valid imho (our media has an impact on us). the discussion wether games are art or not is technically superfluous, but I think it's good that there are people who are putting effort into helping other people see why games are art. Duff-e Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 He's so very wrong. VG is one of the few existing mediums with tons of artistic potential. Relevant: Quote
-HP- Posted April 20, 2010 Author Report Posted April 20, 2010 Chicks response. http://kotaku.com/5520437/my-response-t ... me-skeptic Taylor, why that guy has white pipes around his neck is beyond my comprehension, but if I ever learn't anything about japan is, "don't question". Quote
robert.briscoe Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 What makes me laugh the most is that although this can be 'art': This cannot: Quote
Taylor Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 Well the arguement is probably that the former has a deeper meaning, though to say there is no 'art' out there that isn't arbitrary nonsense would be lying. Either way this whole debate is tired and tedious. What does art mean? Err, not sure. What does game mean? Um, I don't know. Are games art? OF COURSE THEY ARE/AREN'T. Quote
e-freak Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 Not to take sides here but the God of War Picture is a great document of craftsmanship first and if it's art depends on what it conveys. The defintion of art I learned and take for my self is if your work has a message. Handicraft is only a helper. If that bed is meant to say something than it's art. If God of War is beautiful but doesn't have a message then it's not art. Quote
Mazy Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 So I figure that I'm not the only one that automatically just scroll further down every time one of these fucking stories pop up Quote
Warby Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 i am with kojima san on this one ! games are not art ... they are museums ! why anyone would waste their time arguing that games should be put in the same drawer with this shit is beyond me: Quote
-HP- Posted April 20, 2010 Author Report Posted April 20, 2010 games are not art ... they are museums ! That's a beautiful quote! So true! Quote
Gloglebag Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 Its all about interpretation. The orignal mario brothers is an artistic outlook on the path of man. He is constantly moving forward, trying to amass wealth (coins) experiment (eating drugs and flowers) and chasing after the perfect woman (beautiful, princess, makes him cake). You have to overcome the many pitfalls on your journey (death pits) and whenever it seems your journey is at a close, your goal attained, they put the carrot a little farther away from your nose. So is the life of man. -/v/tard Quote
