Now that madcow has informed me this is a good place to ask texture questions I shall now begin a long list of questions on texture/site layouts.

Postman is my influence, although I annoy him a lot :>

Questions!

1) Do you use custom Photoshop Brushes? As in do you go onto deviantart and download some to make your job easier? I've only used brushes so far for blood..

2) Photo Ref. to start? To you usually take a photograph of something you're doing and minorly tweak it on Photoshop? I been trying to do photographs lately with the polaroid border and I found myself using a real-photo that I touched up a bit. (I can post later)

3) When you do a site, do you're layout first in Photoshop at 800x600 then I'm assuming slice it for Dreamweaver? That's what I've done so far.

4) Could someone point me to a site mainly for texturing, or a thread with a long list (besides phong.com though I love it)

5) What version of Photoshop you use mainly?

thanks I might add more as I think of them :D

clay that better be a joke.

1): Nah I don't use that many, I might make a few of my own if I feel that I need it, I mostly use my graphire.

2): That depends on what I am making. If I am texturing, I use photos and just abit free hand. If I am skinning I use hand only. Didnt get the last part.

3): I make it in PS, then I "transfer" it in notepad (leet html skillz). But yeah, I make it at 800x600.

4):

Skinning Tutorials

cgTalk tutorials (this should do it)

As for reference pictures:

FlannelSause.com

Animax

Mayang.com

5): I use Photoshop 6, since its what I got and I do not like the zoom in PS7 and PSCS (8).

1) I use them a lot, I don't have a wacom tablet yet.

2) A photo reference isn't necessary, unless you really don't have that good of an idea of what you want. If you're a little iffy on some features, start simple off a photo reference and expand. But if you have a really good idea of the general pattern or material you want to create, no real use in a photo ref. IMO

3) Depends on what you need. Thats a good way about it :)

4) http://www.cgtalk.com They have a pretty good Texturing forum.

5) CS. I had 6 before, CS was a pretty good improvement from that.

1) almost never. I only use grunge brushes sometimes to draw good alphamasks.

2)this depends. What i do most of the time is cobble parts of a photo together and weld them so it'll look the way i want :). But this only when the photo is good enough. If i can't find the right photo i draw everything by hand.

3)yup.

4)any photoshop tutorial can help you here. texture specific tutorials are very rare, you kinda learn it as you go. Most important is knowing the functions of photoshop inside out.

5) photoshop cs because of its layer structure :) i can have folders in folders now and this often comes in very handy

Yeah I use grunge brushes a lot, its also pretty simple to make your own...take a picture of concrete for example, then just play with the levels so you only have black and whites remaining and tweak it until you get the pattern you want.

depends on the texture. I usually start with a photo for the base and then start layering other photo and handpainted layers on top of that. The days of 100% handpainting EVERYTHING are over...

3) When you do a site, do you're layout first in Photoshop at 800x600 then I'm assuming slice it for Dreamweaver? That's what I've done so far.

i make my sites in 1280x1024 so that anyone with a lower resolution than that is screwed. :D

I use them when I see the place for one, usually make my own, bloospatters are best done with this simple tutorial, take white paper, take ink, take old toothbrush, dip it in to ink, rub the brush with your finger so that the ink spatters across the paper, scan the paper, fiddle with levels and use different parts of the "splatter scale" in your work. It asks alot of creativity to come up with some of the stuff.

Depends, mostly I try to work without photo reference, it taints the texture you are making to look like that photo, even if you didn't mean it to be like one.

3) When you do a site, do you're layout first in Photoshop at 800x600 then I'm assuming slice it for Dreamweaver? That's what I've done so far.

I don't do site layouts in photoshop, I draw them on to a paper, then starts the fun part, CSS coding, takes up to 5 hours to make it work and 2 hours of tweaking to make it look the same on every browser. Don't think about one resolution, think about what people with 1600x1200 resolution see when your page is made for 800x600 resolution, a smal box in the middle of their screen with lots and lots of white. It goes both ways, you have to give them both a good experience about your page.

Umm... try search at cgtalk.com, other than that I don't know.

5) What version of Photoshop you use mainly?

Every time new PS comes out I upgrade to the newest version.
