Valve Teases Upcoming Half-Life Release for Mac

chances are you'd get the same results with linux. you sacrifice potential power and extras for stability. i have to agree with rick's post, especially the last paragraph.

Without wishing do degenerate this any further into Mac vs PC, my Mac couldn't get more stable. It has never crashed properly in the 5 years I've had it, certainly in the OSX side. It's done some pretty hefty work in Final Cut and Photoshop as well, not just sat around as a gimmick. Even when it's in XP mode its still pretty reliable although XSI has it's quirks.

The only thing imo Linux has it's free/cheap. I'd certainly rather have my iMac sitting in a room rather than the hulk of my main PC, shallow but also a reason people buy then.

um, linux and mac osx are both built on UNIX, which is generally seen as a more stable (which is why you also see several unix versions used on servers (solaris springs to mind)). i'm not sure why you think this has something to with the mac vs. pc at all, i was pointing out how linux is as stable as mac.

also duffy, what is it exactly that you do?

I bought an iphone so I could play enviro-bear 2000 on it, true story

Probably the best game ever made.

As for my comment, I wasn't saying I have any problem with Macs in general, I enjoy their attitude to usability and form over function etc. I just personally have no problem with PCs; everything I need is on PC, so I have no _need_ to buy a Mac. I own an iPod and bought it because it was a nifty little piece of tech that was perfect for what I needed it for. However I am the kind of guy who is happy to have a 30 euro phone that barely makes calls and texting possible. I have no need to browse the net or land helicopters while I am on the go; I'd rather read a book.

As for PC being more versatile than a Mac, I see your point. My mother worked for years in the printing industry and Macs were well ahead of the curve for her work. Macs have their uses. I did not mean that a PC is superior in every way - otherwise Macs would not exist. It's just that when you mention "my Mac can run XP" I have to think "why do you need to boot into XP if your Mac is so fantastic?".

Oh and from a purely personal point of view I can't take something seriously that removes a mouse button, and then pretty much moves it to the keyboard. That to me never sat right.

Apple fanboys do more to turn me off macs than anything Apple ever did. I work alongside quite a few Mac/iPhone/iPad zealots and their conversations make my eyes glaze over... zzz

I'm sure Apple products do a great job in certain areas, but fuck, it's just a computer/phone/tablet, not a way of living. Give it a fucking rest, fanboys!

Charlie Brooker":3sumtu7j]I just hope buying a MacBook won't turn me into an iPrick. I want a machine that essentially makes itself invisible, not a rectangular bragging stone. If, 10 minutes after buying it, I start burbling on about how it's left me more fulfilled as a human being, or find myself perched at a tiny Starbucks table stroking its glowing Apple with one hand while demonstratively tapping away with the other in the hope that passersby will assume I'm working on a screenplay, it's going straight in the bin.

Brooker is ace, and that's exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about. I should point out that there's quite a few mac users who aren't tossers and who don't advertise the fact that they love macs, but the moment Steve Jobs scratches his arse or some largely meaningless "lifestyle accessory" or other is announced, the most vocal apple fans turn into massive jabbering arseholes. They all droned on about the iPad for the best part of a month prior to release and I've yet to see one. It's vital, though. Right? Guys?

It reminds me of Anime extroverts who wear leather trenchcoats and won't be silenced. They're in the same bracket of dreary twats who need to shut the fuck up and stop trying to stamp their tastes on other people.

Can you tell this irks me? :D

I find it really weird that you guys have such a crazy mac culture in Europe. Not that there's any reason why you wouldn't but I guess it always felt like a US phenomenon....more specifically a Brooklyn phenomenon.

But then that just be my ethnocentrism showing! :D
