dux Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Shame this Jesus chap wasn't born on the 25th. Quote
Thrik Posted December 8, 2009 Author Report Posted December 8, 2009 Eh, life's too short for that shit. I don't believe in a religion but I wouldn't say I'm against them — I don't really mind if people want to waste their time with superstition. If I spot an opportunity to get drunk and have fun I'm up for it. Hell, I'd probably be out there getting drunk on Independence Day if I lived in the US despite it being about them fucking us over! Also maybe I'm weird but I do like having an opportunity to give some nice stuff to people I love. Again, in an ideal world you'd do it more often... but shit, twice a year is enough. You'd be a happier person if you just embraced it and had a good time rather than feeling like you have to make a stand against it. Quote
dux Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 You do seem to be a grumpy old fuck stepp. Lighten up and be happy for christ sakes Quote
Steppenwolf Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Eh, life's too short for that shit. I don't believe in a religion but I wouldn't say I'm against them — I don't really mind if people want to waste their time with superstition. Probably going a bit off-topic now. I don't mind people having superstitions either. But the reason why i'm against religion is because they interfere with my life and my freedom on a daily basis. We don't live in a "live and let live" society. We are surrounded by religious nuts who make laws for us based on their superstitious beliefs and there are religious groups who treaten our freedoms and values, who kill people daily in the name of their god etc. I value freedom too much to just ignore these things. -HP- Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 I totally understand Stepp's point, and I agree with most of your points, but... I think you're being a little extremist man. I'm a atheist myself, but I don't mind xmas at all. xmas is not about religion any more, it became more of a society tradition. Where, like you mentioned, hypocrite people offers presents to other people. On the other hand, It's a good excuse for family reunion, take a break from work, go back home for a couple of days. Christmas is also all about the children, you know those found memories you have from Christmas when you were a kid? The Christmas tree, all the family reunion, the sweets, the presents... Well, today's children also deserve to live through all that. Quote
Steppenwolf Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 I only sound extremist because this is the internet and i took the stand of the christmas critic in this thread. In reality i celebrate christmas with my family and i appreciate the fun time that my nephews have, the good food etc. My comments reflect much more what my inner concious tells me regarding this holiday. Thrik Posted December 8, 2009 Author Report Posted December 8, 2009 Hey, if nobody else has their trees up yet there's nothing wrong with filling the time with a nice argument! Quote
dux Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Isn't that the spirit of christmas, though? Arguing? Or is that just my family ;D Quote
Sentura Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 the thing is with christmas and me is not so much that i don't celebrate it - i just stop paying attention to it. it's just winter waiting to pass, so i can get back to having better weather and not freeze my ass off everywhere i go. man i hate cold weather. Quote
-HP- Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Yeah, tell me about it... It's a lot colder here in Germany, compared to Portugal. But, funnily enough, I felt a lot colder in Portugal then I do here! All the houses here have centralized heating, transports have AC, etc. I can wander around on my place in tshirt, when It's almost snowing outside, this might be normal for most of you, but for me It's new! Oh man, I remember my room in Portugal, was cold as fuck around January and February! I remember being in the computer working with a bathrobe and a blanket on top of me, and with my hands and face freezing. Almost no apartments in Portugal have centralized heaters, people think they don't need it, but when It's cold, fuck it's cold. Thing about the Portuguese winter, temperatures dont get as low as in northern countries, it doesn't snow or anything and the colder day of the year there is probably around 5ºc, but the cold there is very humid, making it possibly even worse. Quote
Steppenwolf Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Germans prefer the other way of sillyness. We don't have any AC in our homes for summer when temperatures can be tropical for weeks. Quote
Sindwiller Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Fun fact: There is no biblical proof that Jesus Christ was born (neither is there any real proof that such a person existed, but nevermind that) on the 25th of Decembre - the date was defined ~150 years later to match with the annual winter solstice/midwinter fest which was celebrated in every culture in Europe and in Asia Minor (respectively in the northern hemisphere, basically). So Stepp, you can ignore the Christian background and just be happy that we haven't gotten into a nuclear war to cause a nuclear winter yet Quote
Liske Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 I thought this thread was about your christmas trees? I would post one but me being a student only have like half broken ones that dont look so great. Quote
Ginger Lord Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 But the reason why i'm against religion is because they interfere with my life and my freedom on a daily basis. Jesus (lol), I'm never going to Germany if its like that! Sounds like Afghanistan. Quote
e-freak Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 well in germany it's really dangerous... there's alot of these extremist atheists hunting you down if you tell you're a believer. i'm living on the run for a few years now... Quote
