dux Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 I just bought Dead Space for 7 quid. 30 minutes into the game and I had to turn it off lest I vomit over my keyboard. The FOV in this is SO harsh, I have never felt so motion sick in my life. I don't think I can bare another sitting, although it didn't seem all that great as I couldn't really concentrate on the game as I can barely see it the camera is so far zoomed in. It's like playing through magnifying glass! What is wrong with developers and console parts. ARARARARARARARARAR. :ssj: Quote
Steppenwolf Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 Motion sickness is not a fault of developers. Its a medical condition. The same condition that is known as travel sickness and seasickness to other people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_sickness Quote
Psy Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 The option to change the FoV is a must. More developers should give the option. Quote
dux Posted November 29, 2009 Author Report Posted November 29, 2009 Motion sickness is not a fault of developers. This is double edged. Low FOV causes motion sickness so in essence it is their fault for not incorporating high settings to prevent this. Quote
dux Posted November 29, 2009 Author Report Posted November 29, 2009 Because CONSOLES Yes! And besides, who's bright idea is it to have 60 FOV on a 16:10 ratio monitor? Moronic to the max. In my opinion the only reasons consoles utilise low FOV is to help them with their framerate. Lower FOV = less on sccreen = marginally better fps Quote

Corwin Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 Agreed! Borderlands has a low FOV aswell by default, and it forced most of my friends to go into their mouse settings everytime they wanted to play the game to lower the sensibility, as because of the FOV even the lowest setting in the game menus resulted in their characters doing 360 turns whenever they slightly moved their mouse. Eventually, there's a trick to put it back to 90 but it shouldn't have to be a trick. The new FOV in l4d2, with weapons taking a quarter of the screen, was also repulsive at first compared to the perfect FOV of left4dead. In my opinion, most of the time it's due to all the cheap ports from consoles: dodgy key settings (where setting new keys don't change all the instances ingame), shit optimization and the damn unplayable FOV are very common nowadays. Sometimes it feels like nobody even plays the game at least once after converting it to PC... Quote
st0lve Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 Even on a TV, you might want a different FOV depending on the distance from your monitor to you. It should be a mandatory feature in both PC and console games. Quote

Low FOV causes motion sickness so in essence it is their fault for not incorporating high settings to prevent this. I really wouldn't go that far to call it their fault. It's your eye-brain coordination that is causing the nausea not the FOV. It's something that should be discussed with a doctor and not with the developers. Thats like blaming the manufacturer of a ship for seasickness. Of course i understand that this sucks for you especialy when you work in the game dev buisness. I don't want to be in your shoes. You must feel like a cook with an allergy. Imagine you have to work on such a game. This reminds me of when i was in the army. When you sit in a tank you see the sourounding trough an optic with like 3x magnification (minimum) and a FOV of maybe 10-20 degree. It's feels like a constant roller coaster ride for hours. Some of my comrades couldn't handle it and were forced to do a different job. Quote
Buddy Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 In Borderlands you can tweak FOV in engine settings *.ini and yeah i had the same FOV-sickness in Borderlands, i just had to change it :s Quote
Sentura Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 you guys with FOV complaints, do you get motion sickness in cars as well? i get it in cars, but i've never tried getting it in a game.. Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 I'm having this same problem with Modern Warfare Mobilized, its default view is roughly as zoomed on as you'd expect iron sights to be in a different game. Makes me seriously disoriented, and gets me killed a lot. It's like, seriously, if this is the best you can do with 3d you should've made it a 2.5d game. It's not like the gameplay is actually using the third dimension Quote

You betray your roots. Quote
Sindwiller Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 I never experienced any FOV problems (or motion sickness for that matter, but then again, I practically never feel motion sick) in any game I've played so far, be it on a PC or on a console. Quote
