I dont really see how "realistic combat wear" can have any meaning in a science fiction world where you kill aliens that fight with fangs and teeth.

I for one would NOT combat those aliens wearing a polyester shirt, bullet proof west with rayban sunglasses and kaki pants. I'd wear all the scraps of metal I could find.

Erratic is homophobic by the way and easily intimidated by big muscle men

Yeh sounds like somebody made bad experiences in the locker room after hockey practise...

I'm totally comfortable with my insecurities, thanks.

Man I love the look of crysis and mgs armor. In fact the Crysis armor is the coolest motherfucking suit I've ever seen.

And now everyone else should go off topic and post screens of their favorite armor suits.

I agree, I imagine that soft muscle wrap looking armor to behave like kevlar, and be great against direct impacts but not stand up to a slash of a knife (or an arrow, etc) very well comparatively at all. Big thick metal, though, would be the opposite- protection against slashes and punctures, but hard impacts would resonate to the wearer through the metal, probably knocking the wind out of him at least.

PS a good compromise between these armor arguments is Isaac's armor from Dead Space

I don't think realism is the gripe, more that what is being done is not particularly new anymore. I know every game doesn't need to re-invent the wheel, but the NS guys are in a pretty unique position. They are going to sell a lot of copies no matter what (as long as they don't fudge the distribution), they have a long-awaited sequel to a game people still play today.

They aren't under any constraints to appeal to the lowest common denominator, no publisher is breathing down their necks forcing their hand and dumbing down the game (correct me if I'm wrong).

So it seems odd that they would choose to go a pretty generic sci-fi route. Dead Space showed that an armoured guy running around a space station could actually be quite fresh. Halo, quake, doom.. we've been there, done that and bought the power-armour. Surely we could use something newer?

I dont think they are so overly concerned with going new ways in terms of visuals, I think they just want to pay homage to the games/movies that they grew up with and thought were awesome, like Aliens and Starcraft.
