Rick_D Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 Can.. can I be a dick here? The technical aspects of it are great, the texturing and modeling look to be really solid and I can totally buy into the idea behind it. But it's a little "generic space marine" right? Master Chief meets Doom Guy meets any one of the 100 or so "space marine saves earth from aliens" characters we've had in the last 5 or 10 years? Am I being a dick for wanting to perhaps have something a little different? Something a little niche, perhaps more workman-like, not so over-the-top? Seems all this metal would be hard to move in, restrictive and perhaps a bit too heavy? Or is it just a case of: all those other marines were pussies, the NS marines are what the "space marine saves earth" genre has been waiting for? Also, bump. Quote
dux Posted September 24, 2009 Author Report Posted September 24, 2009 It's just an update to the original, but yeah I know. It's hard to make anything in green armour that isn't compared to Halo Quote
jaboo224 Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 Personally i think you guys should of changed the colour scheme... Green seems so overly used. My favourite futuristic marine type soldier are the ones from final fantasy spirites within --> http://pagesperso-orange.fr/ccrame/Imag ... y%2034.jpg or the bf2142 ones ---> http://z.about.com/d/compactiongames/1/ ... 42_039.jpg Quote
Pericolos0 Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 hmm jaboo i really disagree. Those look really generic and I feel like i've seen them before in many games already. The ns one is pretty generic too but it still somehow has the nice ns style to it. Quote
jaboo224 Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 Oh i wasn't saying NS should go with those designs. Those just happen to be some of my favs. However i do not like the colour scheme of the green they got going on there despite the old ones being green as well... To be honest i wish more games would go with a different approach with the armour than what they currently are doing. Not sure why every game has to go with the steel armour look. I guess thats why i like 2142 because its more like body armour that is fabric more so than metal. edit: Mass Effect is a good example of what good sci fi armour should look like imo Quote
Rick_D Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Yeah, the old NS marines were cool as hell, but that was like nearly 10 years ago. We've had a lot of space marines since then. I think Killzone 2 took the idea of technology in the future and really made it work well. Quote
Thrik Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Yes I agree there, the tendency for most futuristic depictions of armour to be this big metal stuff is a bit weird and not particularly imaginative. While this new Natural Selection armour is very well made, I have to say it looks completely unoriginal to me and just makes of think of Quake and Halo. I really like the kind of armour depicted in Metal Gear Solid and Crysis, in that they wrap quite closely to the skin/muscles and use cushioned reinforcement and stuff like that to stop penetration rather than inches of metal — kind of like that real-life flexible orange stuff the Ministry of Defence came up with recently (we had a thread about it I think). The Crysis suit looks really dumb, just like crysis is dumb Quote
Thrik Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 I wasn't talking about MGS's style. I meant the way the armour sits quite close to the body and isn't particularly thick, and the same for Crysis. Those type of armours are where real armour is going, with soft/pliable material that's resistant to impact now becoming a reality. All this thick metal stuff is how the 80s imagined the future. Which is why I find it disappointing whenever I see a new game doing that kind of thing, just like 50,000 other games before it. Especially for a game I've always respected as exceedingly creative. Dumb or not, at least they're more in line with what future armour will actually look like. Quote

I think the oldschool armor, big and bulky will always remain more solid looking. But hey, I think all themes, styles, ideas being used is great, I just dont want every game, espeically NS to loose the style it already has. Quote
Thrik Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Yeah that's pretty much what I was getting at: the old-school bulky armour really does look old school, as in antiquated and out of date. I dunno, it just turns me off now it's featured in about 50,000 games during this last generation or so and was never particularly believable in the first place. If you're asking me if I think the armours in games like MGS and Crysis look better than games like Gears of War and Natural Selection 2, then yes by a million miles. As I said though, the actual production of NS2's model is great. Quote
dux Posted September 25, 2009 Author Report Posted September 25, 2009 Thing is none of those types of armour would really fit in NS. We went for a realistic manner with it, whereas all the examples posted are pretty imaginative but not very functional in the world of NS. (There's a surprisingly large amount of back story!) Quote
Erratic Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Crysis Nanosuit is hideous, give me bulky space marines over it any day. Quote
Thrik Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Yeah, that's true — the NS2 armour does suit the general look of NS as I remember it. I think to be honest this is a bit of a tangent anyway. My ranting is more on the general topic of how futuristic armour is represented in games, I don't want to give the impression that I hate the NS2 armour or anything. I just think the way some games have approached it seems much more believable, with Battlefield 2142 and Killzone 2 being other examples brought up in this thread that seem more in line with how I'd expect future military gear to look. And yeah Erratic, the Nanosuit does look a bit gross with its complete muscle wrapping. I think it was inspired by MGS but then had the attempt to be realistic turned up and the stylisation turned down. I would take it over yet more bulky space marines, though. Quote
FrieChamp Posted September 25, 2009 Report Posted September 25, 2009 Crysis Nanosuit is hideous, give me bulky space marines over it any day. Not meaning to throw gas into the fire, can't please everyone, but for what it's worth, a panel of international experts on design disagrees. Quote
