Sindwiller Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 I blame generic american-biased post d-day games. Theres a shitload more to WW2 than normandy which most game developer seem to forget. Like Dutch-biased 'liberation of the netherlands'-ww2-games? How about Germany's invasion of Poland? Wouldn't that be an interesting theme...? Quote
Skjalg Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 Why has so few done the campaign in russia? Or the whole thing in japan? Quote
904 Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 Appearantly Normandy is the best documented and seems to be the most heroic. I'd like to see a ww2 game from an (oppressed) civilian's point of view, the invasion, bombing of cities, increasing fear for the gestapo, razzia's, people around you being deported. That all mixed with increasing involvement in the resistance, helping people to hide from the ss, planning weapon- and food-droppings, small assasinations, to helping allied forces with intelligence. That all leading to liberation, but from a different point of view. Quote
Buddy Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 Why has so few done the campaign in russia? Or the whole thing in japan? Because you need custom content for them and people won't bother really... I could use the fact that I live in poland to break this monothematical crap Quote
Gorion Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 what i really like to see is the german POV in games.. i want to play a german and shoot other ppl in hitlers name Quote
Sentura Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 for once i have to agree with you, gorion. as unethical as it seems, i think that would be brilliant to put in a game. then add brutality and truth instead of bias for immersion and you'd have a excellent game. for those of you who've played god of war, you will know that the game presents a very plausible environment for the given era. you get it all - blood, sexual themes, etc. while at first i got offended by this, i later saw that it gives a more natural point of view than i've ever seen; it just seemed proper. my point is: if we want games with realism, we need a realistic environment too. let us see the german side, the polish side etc. make a strategy game where you're hitler and command germany; or play as one of the soldiers. this would get me into ww2 games for sure, among others. the drawback would probably be that nobody would allow for the game to exist, sadly, because so many ww2 veterans/jews/whatever else would get offended. Psy Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 I wouldn't have a problem playing as a nazi soldier. Why would I? The war ended long ago and times have changed. I don't see why people would be offended by a game with nazis. Quote

I don't see why people would be offended by a game with nazis. Yeah, if your just playing as a German soldier it would be pretty cool. In the end, all soldiers are just peons, they do what their country asks them to do. Back then, If things were different? A lot of German soldiers had as much in common as the Allied soldiers. Probably could have been great friends as well. Many multiplayer games already do it, but I'd love to see it in a singleplayer storyline. This is why I loved the movie "Letters From Iwo Jima". It took the whole war theme, and put it from the Japanese perspective. And it constantly has you thinking "Damn, those Japanese soldiers were crazy." A few minutes later "Damn, those Japanese soldiers were really kind as well.". And the same thing happens in the movie with the American troops. At one point you see their friendly, kind and liberating side. A few minutes later they're just as bad as the other side. Oh well, going a bit off-topic here I suppose. ^^ But this should really happen more often with videogames. Quote
Quakis Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 Picked up my Duke3D project again since I really want to finish it, tweaked about a lot of the current build and did some test lighting in some areas. The bar area is also going to be a lot different than it originally was, so two shots of current progress though rather empty; Note some things are temp. Quote

It's not that the average nerd has ANY sense of what is happening outside his door, let alone in the past! Seriously though, let the people who agree on this be forbidden to dishonour the ''Lest We Forget'' threads we ever make on this boards.. I rest my case. Quote
Sly Assassin Posted August 27, 2007 Report Posted August 27, 2007 In response to some comments about my map, I was trying to go more for a German town then 'another french damned town' (Yes even I get sick of them), though I think I've got some tweaking of buildings etc to do and need to make some custom textures to fit the area better. I've been working with the original maker of the map (Sector-Effector) and he thinks so far it's looking alright from a Germans point of veiw. But I do agree it needs some more tweaking to look 'unfrench'.... Quote
hessi Posted August 27, 2007 Report Posted August 27, 2007 german towns/villages look completely different! here are some examples: so in my opinion you have to completely restart and use proper textures that match the architecture of the 20's and 30's. if you need texture resources i am sure i can help out. btw. german towns had not that many "Fachwerk" buildings. even if you look at the center of a small village you will see impressive buildings made of stone (like the small tower thing at the bottom). photos are taken from "Ettlingen" near "Karlsruhe" and "Freiburg" Quote
Sly Assassin Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 Hey thanks for the pictures, I'll try and redo some of the buildings and make them look more correct. Do any of the buildings in the pictures actually look slightly German to you or just french? Quote
hessi Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 the problem is all textures you use were used in french themed maps so automatically i see a connection to a french environment. your work does look nice, but it fails in hitting the german setting i would have in mind. if you need help with resources pm me and i can send you a few GB of photos. mjens Posted August 28, 2007 Report Posted August 28, 2007 the best idea is to make a map with polish architecture. almost every map is in french style and this is boring... Even Call of duty 3 is in france :/ if you need some textures or photos just wain. I will release a photo-reference-pack soon... here is one photo of architecture: Quote
