But he isn't just running right and doing loops in that video. Mad Gear Zone looks pretty much like a remake of Metropolis Zone except with giant cogs to run on instead of nuts. And I quite liked the sprawling layouts, not seeing everything first time is good for a short game and you knew if you were heading right you were going towards the exit (well, ignoring Sonic CD).

Water levels in Sonic were the PITA parts you were forced to play between totally awesome sprint-a-thons where you were moving at the speed of sound, doing loop-de-loops so fast the camera couldn't keep up, bouncing 60,000 ft. into the air off springs, smashing robots, and banging hot chicks.

quite frankly running on cogs or on ground seems to be the same thing. so he has to move backwards to move the cog. WOW THAT'S AN AMAZING GAME MECHANIC

Although I quickly realised what I was doing, I did actually start to explain what I felt a platformer could gain from a player-controlled moving platform with inertia that goes through a fixed route of obstacles.
