digeridude Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 This is my project! Shall We Make A Game? is a collaborative, public project to make a video game from the ground up, and is entirely open and free for anyone to participate. It's intended to appeal to people who want to make video games but lack the resources, skills, or established network to do so - which I figure is a lot of people. You may have heard about similar communities, but everything I've found merely allows individual users to upload puzzles they've created with a level editor. There's no true collaboration, and users are essentially building on an already completed game. This is different. Each game starts with a basic concept. The first is Earthnapped!, a zany science fiction adventure in the style of old point-and-click games. Users create everything: story, settings, characters, items, even the interface, and I hook it all up using Adventure Game Studio. They don't have to worry about the technical details, and can instead focus on producing pure content. If you can mess around in Paint or share ideas, you can help. Maybe a bit below the technical prowess of people here, but I think you'll have fun. Check it out and share it with others, please. Click: Quote
ctswin Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Not sure how many people will be interested here, but good luck! What's your experience using AGS and why no post on the AGS forums (that I can see)? also since Buddy annoyed me: Let's not be rude like that, it's some random persons offering of concept, sure it's not great but hell, the point is any one can offer to help out and if they want to help making an ADVENTURE game, they're awesome in my book. Sindwiller Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 You haven't heard of the concept of free/open source software, have you? Quote
Seldoon182 Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Awesome! Just made this Next-Gen Hd new texture for this project as a test. Hope to belong your team soon! Texture Normal map Quote
ctswin Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Texture? I don't think you get what is being made here Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Do you really need a community to make an AGS game. I mean, seriously. It's an AGS game. It's like barely a step up from asking people to build interactive fiction as a community. Quote
Buddy Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 This is not EOT ffs. It belongs in EOT if you haven't noticed yet Quote
ctswin Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Do you really need a community to make an AGS game. You don't need one, no, but why not? Looks like it could be fun. I mean, seriously. It's an AGS game. Seems like you're being awfully derogatory for no reason, while AGS has its fair share of crappy games made in five minutes, it has professional quality games, some commercial, built by teams. While I very much doubt this project is going to hit those heights, there's no reason why a pretty good game can''t be made - while offering those who don't possess the skills to create an entire game by themselves to contribute. Jetsetlemming Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 I've never seen an AGS game of a scope that couldn't be fully realized by one single person working on it. Maybe two if you can't find public domain/freely released music to match your stuff. Quote
ctswin Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 I'll assume that's down to not having come into much contact with AGS games, rather than underestimating the work involved, and link a couple of games which I'd say benefit from being made by a team. Blackwell Convergence http://wadjeteyegames.com/convergence.htm The programmer did previously work on these games by himself, and that looked like this: Resonance http://xiigames.com/resonance/ Quote
JeanPaul Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 You know, Alex (the thread starter) asked me before hand if he should post his idea he's been working on here, and wondered if he would get flamed or shot down. I said, "No, they are a very mature game design community and are actually very nice" Real fucking great, guys Quote
Sindwiller Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 @ Back on topic: You might ask here, although the activity has gone down a bit the past few months, you will still receive some positive responses. However, you should be aware that your concept isn't new at all, it is already being practiced by numerous free (as in freedom)/open source game projects, some of lesser, a few of quite high quality (such as Wesnoth, many projects resolving around TA: Spring, Unknown Horizons, OpenTTD, S.C.O.U.R.G.E., etc.). You'll definitely find supporters inside those kind of communities and projects. Many of those projects don't reach a playable state at all, since all of them are hobby projects and most of them lack commitment or people in general. The projects I mentioned on the other hand are very active and either in a playable state or on their way. What should be mentioned though is that those projects don't enjoy support by experienced or professional game developers (in any way). The only difference between your concept and the concept of FOSS development is that everything (or at least the code) is supposed to be free as in freedom, where everything is legally settled with Open Source/Creative Commons licensing and stuff. But again, that kind of stuff doesn't have a good reputation at all around professional game developers. *cough* Quote
