FrieChamp Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 So, "Dante's Inferno", I'm sure everyone has heard of this one already. Based on Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy", developed by the folks who did "Dead Space" - admittedly I haven't played the game, but heard only good things about it. Now a developer's interview has been released, with some CG footage mixed in, here is what Shacknews quoted from the video: "I read the poem and thought right away like, 'that's a video game,'" enthuses one assistant producer. "Of course, each piece we sort of interpret a little bit differently," warns another, explaining why Dante is a scythe-wielding "over-the-top action hero." Source: http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?story=59127 This is why I like Shacknews so much, it's a place full of hardcore gamers, but when I read the comments I was relieved that I'm not the only one who couldn't share the enthusiasm of the developers. So you boast about basing your game on one of the most influential pieces of world literature and all you can come up with is an action-adventure about a melee-weapon wielding action hero? At one point one of the devs goes: "We are working very hard to make you go 'Ewww dude...yikes' " (making "disgusted" gestures) - I ask myself, is this a goal worth achieving? Entertaining people by making them feel grossed out, like in cheap horror flicks? This looks to me like EA is trying to launch a "God of War" copycat with extra gore. Maybe it's a bit unfair to judge the game from so little that has been shown and give EA crap even though they launch new IPs like Mirror's Edge, Brütal Legend and Dead Space, but marketing like this really makes me lose faith in the big players of this industry sometimes. KoKo5oVaR Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 "I read the poem and thought right away like, 'that's a video game," I read some parts of it, and looked at a lot of the paintings about it; and yeah i thought the same thing it's hard to translate that universe into a videogame, i guess it's always the same dilemma, they had to make something gory, epic with a lot of explosions, flames, zombies and other warhammer like creatures to touch the largest number of players. But It's much darker symbolic and depressing than that : http://jncastorio.unblog.fr/2007/12/15/ ... tave-dore/ http://www.umanista.net/botticelli2.html Quote
dux Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 We've moved onto raping epic world literature now with mediocre game concepts? Oh god. Sorry Mr. Alighieri If anything it should be an adventure game like discworld noir or grim fandango. Quote
Taylor Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 I keep hearing it's another team working on it, at the same place they did Dead Space. I don't see how anyone can read the Divine Comedy and think "zing! gore-filled hack and slash." Over the top protagonist called Dante? Lots of blood and gore? All they really need now is a sexy librarian and to let you dress as a ninja. Quote
Sentura Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 haha, it's great when it says "i want that, i want that to happen". such dominance. Quote
FrieChamp Posted July 8, 2009 Author Report Posted July 8, 2009 [gametrailers]52342[/gametrailers] Yup, it's God Of War by EA. Quote
Erratic Posted July 8, 2009 Report Posted July 8, 2009 I should be bothered by this game, but I'm not, and it looks good. Quote
