FrieChamp Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 ":21z229l0]I don't think It's good for the German economy for Crytek (HQ) to move to another country... they are not exactly just another small company. errr yes they are. How many people are working there - 200? Peanuts. If BMW decided to move away, now that's a concern, but not Crytek Quote
hessi Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 100% with friechamp. game industry can suck dick big time in comparison to well established companies. Quote
-HP- Posted June 8, 2009 Author Report Posted June 8, 2009 ah ah, maybe yeah... I don't give a fuck about politics tho, or economy! I just want to make good game art, don't care if this is the best industry ever! (call me naive... See if I care! ) Quote
kleinluka Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 ":14oux83o]ah ah, maybe yeah... I don't give a fuck about politics tho, or economy! I just want to make good game art, don't care if this is the best industry ever! (call me naive... See if I care! ) You should start caring because the economy affects all industries unfortunately. Germany has never been a safe haven for the games industry. There's little to no support from the government in terms of funding. Look at Quebec for example where the government realized the economic potential of the industry and now pays about 35% on all salaries in game dev studios in the province to attract companies....The result? Ubisoft Montreal created 2000 jobs and a university campus, EA started its studio creating hundreds of jobs, Now Eidos with a few hundred more, specialized schools, etc... It's HUGE. Nothing even remotely close to that would ever happen in Germany. Instead politicians are trying to ban almost an entire market. It just goes to show you how Germany's politicians still live in the 80s in their minds. Quote

2d-chris Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 But oh my god klein, I love the 80's ;( Yeah it sucks, but if there is only one place left on earth to make violent "themed" games I'm sure Crytek will be there yeah and, Like violent shooter games are the entire games industry, ok maybe in Germany but ... Deathy Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 yeah and, Like violent shooter games are the entire games industry, ok maybe in Germany but ... It's not the entire industry. Actually violent games are the minor part of the gamebiz in germany.. Other studios in germany are falling apart because of the crisis not because of the ban. @warby below me: i don't agree. I really enjoyed playing Anno in the past and still am enjoying it. Quote
Warby Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 the other companies are falling apart because they are NOT making violent video games ! lets face it crytek and everyone else really ... they make money because they make games people want to play whilst the rest of germansy game industry makes games no one wants to play Quote

All Anno games are war games, which means they are violent, which means they fall into the first category of games that warby is talking about. So is settlers. Quote

I think Skjalg is bringing up a rather interesting point: the legal details of the law. The political message that is conveyed is "we ban killergames", in detail the proposal would probably read something like "ban of any games depicting virtual violence against humans or humanoid characters", we already have laws in place for extreme portrayal of violence, that's why games get censored or banned in Germany, but if you don't judge anymore between what is adult entertainment and what is "too much" (case by case), instead outright ban everything, you still need to draw the line somewhere. It just shows another facette of how ludicrous and far from reality this proposal actually is. Quote

Hey I wasnt talking about the law, I was just replying to your statement about "violent" games, and afaik war games are violent. Quote
Warby Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 violent games sell that is a scientifically proven fact ! and yeah i agree that war /strategy games are as violent if not more so than first person shooters. anything that were you do harm to a living being is violent down to jumping on gumbas in mario. i wouldn't know where to draw the line ... but i am sure the politicians who don't even know how to use the intertubes will know perfectly well !
