the_s-man2 Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 I don't know if any of you remember me, but my name is Stephen Murray (the_s-man), former Manager/Owner of Citizen-132, HL2Central, GameCentral. Thank you to Cyberjunkie for getting in touch to let me know about this. Martin was a valued member of our community years ago when I was involved and his untimely death is another on the list of young people I've lost this year and has me deeply saddened. He was always ready with a joke to lighten the drama we had going on, especially in the late months of Citizen-132, and I always appreciated his making light of those serious situations. He will be truly missed. I hope everyone is doing well, -Stephen Murray Quote

Cybbe Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 I'm really at a loss for words here... To have someone die at such a young age is the saddest thing in the world - let alone a guy we all loved and cared for so much. I still really can't believe the news. A lot of you guys probably knew him better than I did, but I just know what great a person he was and how much he did for this community. It saddens me a great deal to see such a good man pass away before his time. I remember him from when I joined the IRC channel way back in what must have probably been 2001 or 2002. I remember from back then that it was especially hard as a newbie to get into the cool people's club. This didn't change the fact, however, that Martin was one of the names I remember for lighting up the entire channel and actually greeting me back then and helped me feel welcome in a channel loaded with sarcasm. While everyone dwindled in activity as their lives grew more important, Watah included, I still remember him from spreading his infectious humour on the channel every now and then. I don't really remember a lot from my initial time on Mapcore, but the things I do remember was his name and his humour, and of course the rest of the cool bunch of people that frequented the channel at the time. I remember when I came back in around 2006, I was a bit sad to see so many of the old members gone inactive, but MrH2o was still on the member list. I cherish the times I got a chance to play some games with this guy on xbox live or over steam. I was never really a forum person, but it's my understanding that he was just as active here as he was on IRC, if not more later on. I guess what I'm trying to say really, is that eventhough I might not have been the person closest to him, he has most definitely left a deep impression on me in the best way. And I share your grief when I hear that he has passed away. Bottomline is he was a very helpful guy, and fun to be around. You have my condolences Quote
KidDynamite Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 Watah, I will miss you and it's sad to think you're gone. I wish your family and friends the best, you will be greatly missed by many people all over the world - KD Quote
Mazy Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 Oh no ~~ I don't know what to say. I've known him for almost the last 10 years, we got to the IRC channel around the same time, he always slightly wacky but a really all round cool guy. He would always contact me on MSN once every month or two, always wanted to know if things were alright, just a really nice guy, last I talked to him was just a week or two ago. Once, many years ago, when I wasn't online on IRC for quite a while, he actually managed to get my brothers phone number and called him to make sure everything was alright with me. At the time I kinda thought it was a bit freaky, but after a while I figured that he just cared and wanted to make sure I was okay. In other words, was being a good friend. I don't know what to say, first time this has happened to me, that someone I knew quite well online passed away. Truly a sad day for the core RIP watah, you looney. Quote
Iceduck Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 This is really a big shock for me. Shit. Even though I've never really been a part of the mapping scene, me being Mazy's brother lead to me knowing Martin. We've chatted quite often through the years, about the good and bad things happening in our lives. As Morten mentioned, the one thing I will remember Martin by was the fact that he tried to get a hold of me when Morten was without internet for about a month. He never got a hold of me, just my ex girlfriend, but the effort really showed a warmth and care that you very rarely see in a person, especially from someone you have never met in real life. If he cared so much for people he knew online, he must have been the greatest person to know in real life. Rest in peace, Martin. Anders Quote
-HP- Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 My condolences to the family and girlfriend. Damn, this is really shocking... RIP buddy. Quote
dissonance Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 =( I'm still kinda expecting someone to say this was all a joke. It's really hard to believe someone can die at such a young age. I can't imagine what it's like for his family. Best of wishes to you guys. Quote
wacko Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 Like many others, this comes as a shock to me… and to be honest I am at a loss of words. I knew Martin for about 10 years, and we spoke often on IRC and on MSN about the happenings in our lives and often he would contact me to make sure things were okay. I think that describes the type of person he was; he would often go out of his way to make sure his friends were in good shape and would try to do whatever he could to cheer them up when he could. I know for some he seemed a bit wacky or nuts, but what a lot of people didn’t know is Martin was facing a uphill battle against a major case of OCD which for many years provided much complication in his life, and he overcame thse odds and was able to go out in the world and enjoy not only his job but the companionship of his girlfriend, at the same time he made room for all his online friends and the community he so much loved. I think we have lost a great person in this community, and it will not be the same without him. I know I will miss him and I hope that where ever he has gone he is killing things crowbars, taking pictures and secretly stalking Gabe Newell. Rest in peace, Martin Andrew Spiering Quote
Hourences Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 I didn't knew him that well, but my sincere condolences none the less. At his age it is a damn shame. Quote
JynxDaddy Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 I always looked up to MrH2o, he was just such a cool guy. He was really friendly to me, even though I was an annoying little kid on IRC. you will be missed watah~ Quote
Singedrac Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 I didn't know watah very well either but I used to talk with him on IRC all the time. It's a shame. Quote
Buddy Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 I never actually had a chance to talk to him, but it saddens me none the less... how is this ever possible that someone's heart suddenly stops at such an early age? Condolences to His family and friends. Quote
