FrieChamp Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 http://www.nofrag.com/fichiers/halflife ... nofrag.avi This video shows that HL2 is not a flawless game, focusing on hitboxes and AI. I don't feel that these aspects gave me much trouble when I played the game, but I agree on the message of the video which says that "HL2 is a great fps, one if not the best game of this year, but it isn't the best game of all times".
ShaDoW Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 No game is perfect I guess, and it will be a rare thing to see future complex games like Half-Life 2 be flawless either.

That was just stupid. Tell me what's the best game ever in your opinion and I'll show you its flaws. I don't think HL2 is necessarily the best game ever but it is the best FPS ever IMO.

Mazy Posted November 30, 2004 Author Report Posted November 30, 2004 That was stupid, but the thing with ur enemies just running to the same point and keeps getting slaugthered is kind of uncool
-Stratesiz- Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Farcry had better AI imo, although it was rather buggy occasionally and a better sense of hitboxes. In farcry the enemy actually died pretty much instantly of a headshot no matter what skill level you played on and you actually noticed it. It doesn't feel right in HL2.

No game is flawless and in the end it's all a matter of perspective, but from my point of view, a very linear, scripted game with mediocre AI and not so overwhelming graphics is not the major breakthrough in PC games history (unlike most PC game mags want to tell you). No doubt that it still is a kickass game though, with one of the most immersive atmospheres a player has seen so far.

HL2 is the best game that I've ever played, and the one I enjoy the most. Trespasser was completely groundbreaking with first full physics-engine, but it was hard to find a game buried inside that pile of poo
Tequila Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Exactly. And all this "but it's linear!" bullshit is starting to annoy me. Newsflash: few games are non-linear; Deus Ex, for example, is linear, but you are given a certain amount of leeway in your actions. However, it still follows a narrative path that will carry you from the beginning to a choice of three definite endings. Films are linear - HL2 is like a fine action film, only one you have control over. Basically, linearity is NOT a bad thing, so stop using it as a negative aspect for HL2. Now, I can safely say that HL2 is my favourite game, the best I've played since the original HL, which in-turn was the best I'd played since those magical SNES classics - Mario World, Link To The Past, Super Metroid etc. and, of course, the modding potential blows my mind; another reason to absolutely love the thing. But of course, that's just my viewpoint. I'm sorry if you can't truly enjoy HL2 like I can, for whatever reasons, but man, don't totally rain on its oh-so-fine parade.
Pericolos0 Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 yeah lol linearity doesnt seem to be a bad thing here cos it stays as fun playing it the 2nd time (and maybe even the third time!!!)
-Stratesiz- Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Some sort of freedom would be appreciated, for example, the city is too linear which makes it feel less like a city. The areas where you can fight the striders are too restricted. It felt mostly like a box with striders. Maps with more A and B objectives before you can continue give a sense of freedom. Think of the area with the tentacles in HL1 or the building with the generator thingiesin HL2 . Too linear areas break the illusion of a fully functional world.
marque_pierre Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 Essentially, the more linearity, the more narrative potential and vice reversa. So what do you want? An engaging story that is well told? Hell, I love that, both in films, books and games. But then more or less all "freedom" in the game will have to be a disguised cattle track. Somebody opted that the graphics in HL2 were substandard? :-? Excuse me? What games are better then? And atmosphere? If that isn't 90% art/graphics then what is it?

More things like that would have been nice, but that isn't to say they don't exist in HL2. The bit where you have to use debris to cross the dangerous sand gives the player tons of choice, and it's the physics that not only allow this to happen, but also make the world seem much more 'fully functional' that HL1 could ever manage.
