The story mode alone is awesome and like the previews said it can definitely stand up as a side-scrolling platform game in its own right. I was surprised at all the little minigame levels there are too. I'd imagine you could do nothing except play the stock levels and the better half of the user-created levels out there and still more than easily get your money's worth.

With that said, the editing tools are truly astounding. The depth of the tools is extremely impressive; the only thing more impressive is that they've managed to keep it totally intuitive and easy to use. It never feels like you're overwhelmed, yet there's so much power — there's apparently nothing in the stock levels/trailers that you can't create yourself.

There's also a hell of a lot of polish to the game, which is refreshing as a lot of recent games have felt weirdly sloppy to me. The way the interface, controls, etc work is extremely well thought out; the music is beautiful; the narrator (Stephen Fry!) is superbly entertaining; and it's just generally a really slick game.

It's doing exceedingly well on MetaCritic, incidentally:

10/10 from Edge? God, man. I think anyone who doesn't give this game a go is certifiably mental.

I have seen two colleagues play through the first two levels in two player mode yesterday, was awesome. Had a great laugh as well. Awesome style and gameplay, and seems like it will be able to attract a very wide audience, from kids to grown ups, to girls, to casual and hardcore gamers. Hats of to them :)

Been getting into the online stuff today. It adds a whole extra dimension playing even the stock levels with other people, and you can dick around a lot more and have a lot of fun. And I continue to be amazed at the quality and variety of the stock levels, and also the editing tools (I've seen just about every mechanic seen in Mario/DKC/etc done thus far — any many that're new to LBP).

come to think of it, my only gripe is the narrator. in no way can you switch off the narrator, and with the localized version, i'll have to sit through some danish guy blabbing on and on about something or other... and it just pisses me off royally.

It's a shame you don't get the English narrator: Stephen Fry essentially reprising his role at the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy narrator. It's genuinely funny and really suits the feel of LBP imo.

Does doing anything like changing your PS3's regional options adjust it? You'd think with Blu-Ray they could fit multiple translations on. Guess they could just as easily not have done, though.
