twiz Posted October 24, 2008 Report Posted October 24, 2008 Haha whoops! Right after I post another south-easterner chimes in I agree with you Chunks, I am also concerned with what will happen with the democratic ruled government, the extreme partisanship of our government severely cripples the check and balance system. However, although I'm sure we will shift significantly towards the liberal end of the spectrum, I don't think we'll ever get to socialism. Some politicians still do vote for what they believe in, not just what their party wants them to vote. And on that same token, I don't think the democratic party wants socialism; they'd like to move further left than we are currently, but not that extreme left. I am sure some of the change they will make will not be good change, but I believe the majority of it will be for the better. I have seen what the Republicans do with control of Washington, and I don't want to see it anymore. It is now the democrats turn. If they fail, I am sure the American public will let them know with their votes for senate in another two years. Quote
FrieChamp Posted October 24, 2008 Author Report Posted October 24, 2008 I created this thread yesterday and people are already talking about locking and leaving the thread - I think most of us have been around here for long enough to know that this would head into this direction. I'm glad the discussion is somewhat turning into a more moderate discussion "on topic" though, just one last thing about this "Americans are arch-conservative deeply religious racist rednecks" controversy: I think some of the generalizations made about Americans on the previous pages are quite ludicrous, yet I believe the Europeans are not the only ones exaggerating. The truth is somewhere in between. What I don't understand is how this has anything to do with the ongoing election! Barack Obama (the black dude) is leading in any poll, doesn't that mean that Americans want a change in their government's politics? Shouldn't we congratulate them to a more liberal, open minded government? I have the feeling many Europeans' faith in America is still shattered by George W.'s re-election 4 years ago. The election isn't over yet, the Republican candidate still has the chance to win this, it happened before, but we can be optimistic...Special thanks to Twiz by the way, for giving such a detailed insight on your personal view and on the happenings in the states these days. Let me tell you from a European outside perspective, that your concerns (or Chunk's rather) about socialism are not necessary. One part of Germany used that system for about 40 years and it's nothing like what Obama has in mind! This sounds like Republican propaganda to be honest. You raise taxes for millionaires and you are a commie Quote

This sounds like Republican propaganda to be honest. You raise taxes for millionaires and you are a commie Indeed, I am certainly all for being more socialist, hence my democratic vote. Our health care, education services, and social services are a pitiful joke right now and need serious immediate attention. I come from a wealthy family that will likely be affected by Obama's tax plan, yet they are all still voting for him. Not all wealthy people are selfish, good things cost good money and health care and education is certainly something I'm willing to pay for. I have the feeling many Europeans' faith in America is still shattered by George W.'s re-election 4 years ago. Not only Europeans, I was crushed by GWB's re-election. After that I had no faith in Americans to make the correct decisions, so you can imagine how strong of an impact Obama must be making here to have me feeling so confident about America's future. Don't let me down again!!! Quote
st0lve Posted October 24, 2008 Report Posted October 24, 2008 Indirectly helping others by paying taxes isn't scary... I just hope that before the election, both candidates go out and condemn the racism and blind hatred against each others. I wouldn't want someone to be my president if he had been calling his opposition for stupid things. People need to learn that there are other ways to win that just suckerpunching to the balls. Quote

Spellbinder Posted October 31, 2008 Report Posted October 31, 2008 I am an anarchist living within the rules of law as much as i can. That means i never vote, now i don't live in US thank god so i don't have to. It is like choosing between pest and cholera. And faced with that i choose to let the nature have its course. First of you can never be sure about any of those two guys, whats been said in press is often lies or blown up. But one thing i do know, both of them wants to be president so much they have thrown away billions for it and years in the senate and what not. Now thats power hunger. In anyway i believe Obama will win, because american people are in fact quite narrow minded people (this is an OPINION of mine and not a fact!) so they think everything will be better. When in fact nothing much will change no matter who wins. One thing though that i am totally convinced of, is that are probably groups of people out there in the US that works for other causes, like a white America or Christian America, just think of secret sociaties even Bush has been in during college and stuff. Students that have later in life become powerfull with lots of money. Not to talk about ultra rightwing groups and everything else there is, (i aint saying this is typical US, probably will find groups like this in any country). So i think Obama will win and as soon as one of these groups have a chance they blow him to kingdom come. Thats my forsee of the future in US, sorry but true. Quote
Bluestrike Posted November 1, 2008 Report Posted November 1, 2008 Doesn't matter to me as they are both right winged in european terms (if they both would be european party's they would be on the right side of the spectrum) But if McCain wins he better stays alive for his whole term because Palin seems pretty uninformed to me :-) I rather saw Hillary sitting on the throne Quote
