arhurt
Hey guys, I'm putting together a portfolio and I'd like to hear your opinion on it. http://arhurt.carbonmade.com/ I know that I'm using carbonmade, but it's fast and let's me focus more on what I want to show rather on how What do you guys think, I know that the focus of it is quite broad right now but I want to show how gaming in general is a part of my life. I don't put any text and explanations at all, I will comment on particulars works on the CV, and I think that most of it is self-explanatory anyways. What do you guys think? Erratic
I don't think it's too bad to include art and design but I'd have the page focus more on one than the other. Right now it's pretty even split, as you said. Dunno, that's just my take.
arhurt
Thanks One thing someone mentioned is to take down a few of the illustrations that have bad anatomy or are of poor quality. In fact I agree since I just want to show that I can draw properly, but it's not like I want to be a concept artist or full time illustrator. It's just to fill in that "everyone must have a traditional arts background". I'll do some good sketches to put up there as well. But yea, you can say it's evenly split at the moment. And since my only level design project is ctf_aerospace I have split it into 3 sections, but those will be merged as I finish more maps. Punky
Maybe you could split up your 'folio in a 'main-arts page' and a less import art page, you could also just make a subdivision to make clear on which things you mainly focus when doing game-design... IR
Best work only! feels like you put anything you've ever done up there, and you start with your lastest (best quality) and end with (im guessing no offence ment) old stuff. quality goes down as i shift through the pages and end up remembering that green blob with the one eye render in general its also to much! you have 16 pictures of 1 map and then another 9 of the same level but an older version tone it down, loose the old lower quality stuff. i do like the simplicity! but im missing a clear contact/resume link on every page
2d-chris
What IR said, (hey man!) Otherwise some really nice stuff there :bananawrench:
Steppenwolf
Don't forget to add a watermark with your name and email adress on each picture. If some recruiter or lead saves one of your pictures on his hdd he will later know where it came from.
arhurt
Thanks for the feedback guys! @ Punky: I'll have to get creative on how to actually make that split since I'm using carbonmade and must be contempt with the features built in it. As of right now I can't create separate pages with galleries. I guess I can create something such as a tag on the gallery image. @ IR: I've removed blob along with some of the other crappy old models. Thanks for the heads up I guess I was trying to show improvement, but that wasn't really working. I guess your old work is only good to prove to yourself how much improvement you get over each project past. @ Steppenwolf: Good call. I'll have to do that later! Thanks guys, I'll post back here when I have spiced things up a bit
Minos
Yup you need to focus your work... looking at your portfolio I can't really decide what position you are looking for. Perhaps you could have two portfolios, one for level design and another one (a deviantart page maybe) for illustrations and RPG stuff. Furyo
As far as showing old work and improvement, there'd be a slight modification I'd make to the comments above, even though I do agree with them: I think it's fine to show old work as long as that's the ONLY version of the work you present. Good, old work is still good when pros take the technical limitations or your own personal knowledge into mind. In your case, you're showing multiple versions of the SAME work, which is where it just doesn't work for me. Your own personal improvement over multiple maps is I think something actually you SHOULD show. Proves you're able to learn from your mistakes and are getting better. The accompanying text, whenever there should be one could also help sell that idea.
arhurt
Thanks for the feedback guys! I have updated the folio with your suggestions, as well as adding a ton of info on the about/resume page. Take a look and let me know what you think. Punky
Looks better, but on the 'about' page some of the text is misaligned!
Ascard
Don't forget to add a watermark with your name and email adress on each picture. If some recruiter or lead saves one of your pictures on his hdd he will later know where it came from. great tip, often overlooked (by me )
