kleinluka Posted August 23, 2011 Author Report Posted August 23, 2011 What is the Wilhelm Scream? Lol Quote
dux Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 The Wilhelm scream is a film and television stock sound effect first used in 1951 for the film Distant Drums. The effect gained new popularity (its use often becoming an in-joke) after it was used in Star Wars and many other blockbuster films as well as television programs and video games. The scream is often used when someone is shot, falls from a great height, or is thrown from an explosion. The sound is named for Private Wilhelm, a character in The Charge at Feather River, a 1953 western in which the character is shot with an arrow. This was believed to be the third movie to use the sound effect and its first use from the Warner Brothers stock sound library. Quote
-HP- Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/08/22/70336/ Amazing article is amazing! Also, this is fucking amazing, the art direction in this game is really cool: And on the topic of The Wilhelm scream: Quote
Thrik Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 I wish I'd never watched that fucking video. Since first being made aware of the Wilhelm screen I'm constantly spotting it in games, films, and TV shows and it always takes me out the moment. Quote
Vilham Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 tbh before even knowing about that just now ive always noticed the same death sound, its in dozens of games. Quote
D3ads Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 Yeah, there are so many stock sound effects used over and over ingames and tv such as that generic door opening/closing, a couple of effects I remember from Doom such as the player death scream and the "whoosh" sound of napalm when the squares fly out of the final bosse's brain in Doom II. There's another scream effect that's used almost everywhere too... [edit] This is it; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZFR7aZ3oAc Speed that up and you might recognise it from a certain creature in HL2 Quote

Warby Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 i used to find wilhelm screams funny ... but now they take me out of the experience ... it feels like some sound guy inappropriately inserted a fart sound somewhere or something ... immersion breaker. Quote
