I really hope they rethink the auto heal system. I dont see how this is compatible if you want to stay true to the original this time.

If it is a augmentation that takes up some energy ok but the same system as in cod ??? Ewwwwww.

Deus Next: The next installment in the long series of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" video games where nothing should be different but everything that is exactly identical also sucks.

Fan boys may be the bread and butter of this industry, but there are times when not listening to them at all should really be your first priority.

I can't even describe how irritated I feel when someone says something like that.

Seconded.

Well.. For example, I remember when I was working on Rainbow Six Vegas and we released the first details and media on the game, all the fanboys were hating it and bitching at us calling us idiots and basically tearing us a new one based on incomplete or unclear information. In the end, everybody loved the game.

So maybe...just maybe... you could have some trust in the people working on this game ;) We know what it takes to make a good game. And we all love Deus Ex ...so have faith  (PS: Yes, I know that Rainbow Six and Deus Ex are two vastly different game types but still... :shifty: )

You're so lucky to be working on a new Deus Ex game, Klein :(

I had a chance to look at the screens before they were taken down, looks very cool indeed. And the main characters name is Jensen, which makes it an instant buy for me!

LOL. yes, he was named after you btw :)

heheh.

I'm actually pretty ok with the news so far. I'm not worried. :P I've begun to wonder about other stuff now, like "Are there LAMs or something similar". I absolutely loved Deus Ex's grenade system. :-D All of them fall into specific uses, and all of them can double as prox mines attached to walls or hand-thrown projectiles. It was fucking awesome. Anyone who DIDN'T find DX's grenades to be awesome is a goddamn monster. :v

Also "Does the regen system work like COD, where it's your sole source of healing and it's all regen, or more like STALKER where there's some regen over time, increased via artifacts/augs/macguffins, with healing items for when you're in a pinch", or possibly "like Halo 1 with an outer shield that recharges and an inner health bar that doesn't and needs health items to fill".

You know, I'd actually be fine with either of the latter ones. Both fit the fiction, and both would work in an RPG, where I don't see how you'd possibly pull off COD health regen with a RPG system.

Just some answers to some of the major questions from our Marketing community dude.

Auto Health

Yes, Deus Ex 3 will use auto-health regeneration. This is a departure from the original but the industry as a whole has grown up and changed quite a bit in the last eight years and the designers didn’t want people exploring levels just for health packs or having to reload to an old save game because they messed up a scenario and couldn’t advance. I know some people actually liked the exact scenario I just described but this is a decision the team made.

Cover System

The design has been updated to utilize a cover system should you choose to engage it. As the game is still 1st person, it’s only if you press a key when up against a wall that the view changes to a 3rd person perspective. As soon as you move away from the wall, the game returns to 1st person automatically.

So it's just an option if you want to play that way. If you like the good 'ol DX1 style, you don't have to engage the cover system if you don't want to, so you'll see even less of the contextual 3rd person elements. You can just as easily walk up to that same wall in 1st person and never see the 3rd person cover. It’s just an option if you want to see the way Adam looks with augmentations you’ve chosen throughout the game.

Stealth System

Stealth in DX3 is based off line-of-sight and sound propagation. You can hide everywhere you see fit as long as you’re hidden by an obstacle and you don’t produce too much noise. Think MGS1&2. In the first DX an enemy could be three feet in front of you but as long as you were in darkness he would not detect you. I mean, graphically in DX3, you still have light and shadows but the shadows are no longer used as the primary stealth element; it’s line-of-sight.

And in the end, because of how a Deus Ex game should work (and DX3 does), depending on your play style, everyone’s experience will be different. There are many ways to advance in the game or to solve a problem. To some, the above three aspects may sound like heresy, but Deus Ex is so much more than these three things.

To me, Deus Ex is about choices & consequences, non-linearity, customization, different ways to complete an objective, story, dialogue, character interaction, a Cyberpunk world, a massive conspiracy, etc. All aspects Deus Ex 3 has in spades.

This REALLY should be an aug/implant/whatever it's going to be. The industry has not grown up, while it has changed - that change has swerved onto serving the more casual gamer as consoles are now the mainstream and primary focus of a lot of developers. That idea right there for health regen is designed for the causal / console gamer. Having health regen is going to be a real no brainer. If you're hurt all you're going to have to do is sit in a corner and suck on your thumb for a while until you're at full hit points. In deus ex 1 you'd actually have to think about how you're going to approach a given combat situation if you're low on the old hit points. But oh no, health regen has just thrown that out of the window. I would shit my pants in deus ex 1 when I had low hit points and had to take down several enemies. It made me think about other alternatives to the situation as there was always more than one. But from the sounds of it all I'm going have to worry about is if I can find a corner to sit in. I'm still looking forward to what can be done with the game, but it's little design choices like this that start to make me lose confidence.

Ho ho ho, I'm gonna get raped.

It's actually a very valid point to me, and while my previous reply may have been misinterpreted as not caring for feedback, the "some times" in the quote was important. It's actually a major design decision, not just a small one as it impacts the entire game.

Some more FACTS about the game as taken from our Community Manager to answer some questions on the official boards...

RPG

Deus Ex 3 is an RPG. An action/RPG like the first one (Deus Ex).

FIRST PERSON OR THIRD PERSON

The game is FIRST person, but automatically switches to third person for some contextual actions.

You, as the player, do not have the ability to swap between views...it's a first person game but there are times where we want you to see Adam doing cool things.

STORY/PLOTLINE

The story and conspiracy elements are every bit a Deus Ex game. It's awesome.

The writing team at EM is made up of many talented and experienced people. And did you notice the Sheldon reference...?

MULTIPATH/NON LINEAR

It's still based around making decisions which have consequences, selecting from a multi-path, multi-solution approach in a non-linear space (think DX1 not Invisible War), and you're able to customize your character (Adam) as well as your weapons. DX3 is an action/RPG just like the first game.

When it comes to freedom, having space to search and roam in, and to run the streets and sewers, don't worry - we have that.

This was just a magazine first look. That stuff will come next time.

AUGMENTATION & TIMELINE

Adam has mechanical augmentations. Paul and JC were the first of the nano augmented. That's why it makes sense as a Prequel...remember Anna and Gunther were mechanically augmented. And with mechanical augmentations, you will actually be able to see Adam look awesome whereas JC looked pretty normal.

LOADING/LEVEL CHANGE

Our tech supports streaming of data so the transition from indoors to outdoors will be seamless.

FETUS IN TRAILER

I don't think it's a character in the game. I think it has hidden meaning...

HACKING

Hacking is a major pillar of gameplay and is certainly not a mini game. (Sorry Bioshock)

Hacking in Deus Ex 3 is a significant gameplay option which you can modify with augmentations if that's the way you develop your character.

Our hacking is well beyond a "mini game" and is really freaking cool.

CHOICE & CONSEQUENCE

The social aspect of the game is extremely important. Do not fear.

Choice and consequence is a major design influence. This is still a Deus Ex game.

GLOBAL/LOCAL/SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT

Don't worry - we know that traveling the world is one of the core values for Deus Ex...

You have city hubs to explore in a non-linear fashion.

There are different routes and different ways to complete an objective.

The social element is huge. There are tonnes of characters to interact with and the story is massive with a global conspiracy.

CHARACTER/AUGMENTATION DEVELOPMENT

You do gain experience points throughout the game which you can use to either upgrade yourself or your weapons. It's a choice.

There are many augmentations in the game so like the first one, you can choose how your character (Adam) develops.

So is it like the COD system where you're the videogame equivalent of that one girl from Heroes and damage is irrelevant, like STALKER where your health regenerates over time naturally and there are healing items to help in an emergency, or what? Both systems prevent the player performing himself into a corner like that and screwing himself over, while one is unfun and arcady and far too simplified. :/ It fits Call of Duty but Call of Duty isn't a deep RPG. Call of Duty isn't about the gameplay as much as it is the "cinema" of the events, and if the hero dies that sort of ruins the scene. :P Deus Ex however is about consequences and options, and there's no more concrete consequence than death and options without risk are pretty boring.

The design has been updated to utilize a cover system should you choose to engage it. Can you turn off your PC connecting to the cover point if you get close? I know that's a complaint I've heard a lot about games with cover systems like GTA4 and Kane and Lynch, where the game will auto-connect to viable cover points when you're trying to move past it or near it. Perhaps a setting where you have to hold down a button while pressing against the wall to take cover, or move up against it then press into it again, like how MGS works with leaning against things (I've never heard anyone bitch about that :P).
