TorQueMoD Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 Hey all! This is a bulletin to let all Canadian indie game developers know about Telefilm and their New Media funding that is available to all Canadians who are trying to secure funding for their game projects. http://www.telefilm.gc.ca/accueil.asp Through Telefilm, amateur game developers can apply for government funding of up to $550,000 (or 50% of the total development cost) for the development of a game. For the past 4 years the Canadian government has put aside $40 million that is made available to all New Media applicants! That's a load of money for indie game developers and something that any up and coming Canadian developer would want to take advantage of. Now the reason I'm making this post is because I recently found out that the Conserative party was about to pass a bill to CUT all New Media funding completely! No more funding for Canadian Game developers! The GOOD news is that because of the forced election this October 14th, the bill didn't go through and we've actually got a chance to SAVE the New Media Funding. How do we save it? Don't vote Conservative! I'm not trying to tell you who you should vote for next month, but if you're Canadian and you're at all interested in helping the survival of indie game developers, make sure you're at the voting booth on October 14th, and vote for ANYONE other than the Conservative party! Minos Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 That's a damn nice initiative from the governmenta, I just hope those conservatives go back to their churches and leave the game developers alone Quote
TorQueMoD Posted September 27, 2008 Author Report Posted September 27, 2008 you don't have to vote in the morning. You can even vote before the 14th if you can't make it in at the scheduled time. Quote
jaboo224 Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 Hey all! How do we save it? Don't vote Conservative! I'm not trying to tell you who you should vote for next month, but if you're Canadian and you're at all interested in helping the survival of indie game developers, make sure you're at the voting booth on October 14th, and vote for ANYONE other than the Conservative party! Ummmmm, I vote for the conservatives because they are the only ones doing anything decent with our economy which what really matters tbh. Conservatives for the win. This topic seems to be more less worried about your little political goals more than the money given to indie developers. Liberals have ran this country for way too fucking long, and they have shown us what type of people they are. They lied to us over and over again and had a TON of money being given to the WRONG people...... Bunch of quebec lovers and money wasters. What happened to getting a decent job and making money. No lets turn canada into a freeloading asshat of a country. What we need is hard working people who work for their position in life not a bunch of people who get stuff handed to them. Conservatives is what got alberta out of debt and its about time we get the rest of the country out of it..... Think of the future!!!. Vote Conservative! Quote
TorQueMoD Posted September 28, 2008 Author Report Posted September 28, 2008 If this topic was about my political goals, I would have told people who to vote for. My only reason for starting this topic was to let everyone know that if you vote conservative, you're killing any chance of inde developers in Canada getting real support. I'm not even going to bother getting into a debate about the pros or cons of any particular party because that's not what this topic is for. If you think that a government that supports the industry you love (video games /new media)is important however, then the conservatives aren't who you should be voting for as they are the only party who want to cut the new media funding. jaboo224 Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 Tbh indie game developers to me are awesome because of the fact they are Independant. They will still live. There are way more important things to have money spent on. Also there is a huge chance the funding will stay even if conservatives are in again. Quote
TorQueMoD Posted September 28, 2008 Author Report Posted September 28, 2008 What are you talking about? The conservatives are the ones who initiated the bill to CUT New media funding. If they win, they WILL cut new media funding. Hence the stance of don't vote conservative. Quote
jaboo224 Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 Yeah i ate my words and re-edited my post. please re-read it Quote
TorQueMoD Posted September 28, 2008 Author Report Posted September 28, 2008 I noticed. Again, I'm not trying to tell people who to vote for, I'm simply informing them of one of the Conservative's initiatives. I actually had no problem with the conservatives until I heard about this bill and since I was 1 month away from applying for the funding myself, its a little disheartening to find that they were trying to axe it completely. jaboo224 Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 To be honest your best bet is to actually email them about this. Get their opinion on it. I emailed them a few years back about the oil raise and they gave me a decent answer that didnt sound like bullshit. You can always contact your political leaders man! As well there are media grants you can get in canada if you meet the requirements. Quote
TorQueMoD Posted September 28, 2008 Author Report Posted September 28, 2008 Sending them an e-mail will only get me an answer as to why they're cutting the program. Its not going to prevent them from cutting it. Quote
jaboo224 Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 No, but they have very good information for the reasons and not to mention they can even possibly give you their opinion on indy game developers and etc. Its worth the email, if you wont send them an email i will :] as i am interested in their take on the subject Quote
Chunks Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 i'm not canadian so I have no business giving my .2c about the subject but I figure I will. Feel free to ignore it. Gov't projects like this should probably the least of the worries of a government and I wouldn't cast my vote purely on the basis of this new media stuff. You should look at the bigger picture. I'm not a fan of gov't handouts/subsidies/etc. Quote
