NykO18 Posted September 16, 2008 Author Report Posted September 16, 2008 The video reminds me of a gamegraphics video of a demoparty in Germany. Hehe yeah. The beginning (credits) reminded me of one of Farbrausch's demos (debris iirc). Caramba! Nous sommes démasqués. Yeah well, our videomaker found this demo so awesome that he thought it could be cool to do the same. And that's it. Anyway, I wondered a long time if we should go away from the visual style of Portal. But that would have required another adaptation to this new environment and probably new tutorials to begin the game. We didn't want to make another game for stupid people who need 3 rooms to understand that a cube can trigger a button. (that's a bit harsh maybe xD) Quote
General Vivi Posted September 16, 2008 Report Posted September 16, 2008 looking good! a bit jealous is this guy <----------------- Can't wait to see how my map holds up to this one. Quote

You could also just change colors of some textures, introduce a few new textures, and add a basement section or so, and that would be enough already. You dont need to change gameplay or the typical gameplay elements (this kind of texture cant be portal'ed, etc), just a change in color or material may make it feel refreshed already. Quote
NykO18 Posted September 16, 2008 Author Report Posted September 16, 2008 Yep, I understand what you mean. Unfortunately, this was not our goal from the start, for many reasons in fact. Now we don't have enough time left to rework all the maps. Anyone could do this aswell too. Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 Saw the trailer and am looking forward to this mod. Quote
Furyo Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 So someone tipped Kotaku about this....and hello fame http://kotaku.com/5051178/prelude-prove ... till-alive Quote
Thrik Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Never mind Kotaku, it's on Digg now: http://digg.com/pc_games/Portal_Prelude_Day_Zero Quote

El Moroes Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 Mod is released http://www.portalprelude.com/ Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 I'm hearing horrible things about this mod from all over the internet. The humans in the mod are all voiced by text to speech synthesizers working with misspelled and automatically translated english from french, the level design requires off the wall techniques such as abusing physics glitches, there are a number of level design errors such as overlapping brushes, misaligned gemoetry, nodraw textures visible, and obvious leak patchwork, over the top and unnecessary swearing throughout, etc... Apparently the Portal Prelude forums have been shut down from all the complaints and negative responses. Quote
Quakis Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 I personally didn't enjoy this one myself either. It's indeed challenging but I personally didn't find it fun to play at all. Quote
Furyo Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 I talked to Moroes directly to voice my concerns, and only made it to Chamber 5 before my patience ran out. I haven't experienced all the bad things you mentioned above, but the unintuitive level design was one that was glaringly obvious. I'm told Nyk018 wanted to cater to the hardcore Portal players, something I clearly am NOT, only playing the game occasionally. Overall I think it's a mistake to design the mod for this very precise and knowledgeable target group by artificially increasing the difficulty (playing with glitches, not making clear paths in the levels) instead of doing what Valve did, which is build the main game for anyone to enjoy and give additional challenges that are just copies of the maps with less ingredients for the hardcore masses. dux Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 Wow, even if the mod didn't live up to expectations (I've no idea I didn't play it) It just goes to show as conclusive proof how dumb the half-life community still is by having to close the forums from all the flamewars. I looked at it the other day before it was closed, and my god - people not an inch of sense about them. Quote

We've had a few genius' come into the HaJ spouting nonsense without even seemingly looking at photos or the site. I remember one asked "Where are the Americans? You know they won WW2 and the Brits did sod all?". :ssj: Quote
Hourences Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 I completely agree with Furyo. I liked the voices actually, they did talk a bit much sometimes, but I liked the idea of these people doing stuff in the background, fits well. I got until room 15 or so, but I noclipped through half of them... It is too hardcore, and too plain frustrating at times. There are also several moments when you die from something you had no clue was there (turret behind a door in a dark corner?...). Nonetheless it is still a big achievement and it looks quite ok. I can imagine that many people do overreact, and a lot of normal players are just plain stupid... Its a shame that it is received like this. Quote
