Polaris Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 Now look what youv'e gone and done ferret. Quote
von*ferret Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 Its f'ing sweet quality. I dont know about the application. Nothing personal! I love you SinisterSquirrel! Quote
Squirrelly Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 What exactly do you mean, ferret? As in, the normal map sucks, or it just wouldn't fit in anywhere? I should also mention it doesn't look good because it was my first render, and hell, it wasn't even rendered. Its a screencapture of the viewport in max, because I honestly have no idea how to render with normal maps and specular maps applied. Quote
kleinluka Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 That looks like a ton of geometry to just bake onto a single plane =/ That's the whole point of normal mapping summed up right there. from straight on. From the side you'd notice the problems. That is the sad side effect of normal maps. If this is used on a large surface like a wall in a long hallway I don't see using actual geometry for the tanks being very helpful for performance. I think it's just fine the way it is. It would be nice to see an ingame shot of this texture though. Quote
Squirrelly Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 Finally, some positive encouragement. As for in-game... well, not meant for in-game. Quote
von*ferret Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 Things like the cylinder I can't see coming off great ingame. Things like the panels that have a ton of geometry I can. IE: THings that are obviously going to push "out" of the plane are going to be noticed as not real. Where as the panels and such would be succesful. I'm not trying to pick on you! Quote
Quakis Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 Another texture I worked on that is being used in a Duke3D project. I'm pretty much happy with the result but I think something is missing. Ingame. The white blocks are just a default texture. http://img433.imageshack.us/img433/5530/ma0013wz.jpg Quote

Yes but sometimes that is a sacrifice you have to make for performance. Cylindrical objects eat a lot of polygons so if you can't afford it, and the object doesn't absolutely require it then a normal is just perfect Quote

Is that the default engine? Quote
Squirrelly Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 That looks fecking awesome Quakis. Quote
Tarky Posted April 24, 2006 Report Posted April 24, 2006 Just some textures I did for a project that the studio im employed for was working on. Yes they are low res, that was intentional due to the nature of the project. Project is currently shelved though. (Note: Graffiti in the background was sourced from Google, and was placeholder) And yeah, they are intentionally really grungy. Quote
Squirrelly Posted April 24, 2006 Report Posted April 24, 2006 Not too shabby, Tarky. Your normally wouldn't find graffiti on wood, though. I'm liking the road textures... I just wish they were a higher resolution. Quote

I just wish they were a higher resolution. Its actually a concrete ribbed sorta thing. Intended for a train tunnel. Unfortunatly I lost the higher res versions to a hdd crash, along with a tonne of other textures for the project. I cried.. Quote
