Grinwhrl Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 SP is really good fun, lots of old school shooter nostalgia from it. A 6.8, what a douche, the SP game deserves an 8 at least. Quote
KungFuSquirrel Posted August 23, 2009 Report Posted August 23, 2009 Not an entirely convincing review from what was said. Raven seem to be going downhill a bit? If anything, they're on a major upswing since my time there. But, this was a tough title for everyone who worked on it. The game is 5 years old; it started just before I started at Raven in 2004. I left Raven as a result of this title 3 years ago, as did numerous others. Coming from an insider perspective, the work Raven did on this game is flat-out stellar. Yeah, it's not perfect, and yeah it could be better. There's some really haphazard levels (Midtown) still in the game that have gone through 4 years of "first-map-itis" and repeated hacked-in changes. Hell, I've been gone nearly 3 years and I'm finding stuff that I did still in some areas. Frankly, the achievement list on the 360 is among the worst since Perfect Dark Zero. But in the months after many of us left, the guys still there took on some huge undertakings and the right guys got themselves into the right positions as they basically re-built the game from the ground-up. I really believe if they'd been able to make those changes sooner a lot of us might have stayed. Where the game really shines is where they had the time and resources to completely abandon a lot of the old stuff, some of which was even good, but suffered from lack of direction and repeated changes and shifts. The new areas (if you've played the Farm and attached Nazi base) really showcase the potential that the whole game could have reached under better circumstances. Certainly the place has had problems in the past, and certainly projects as messy as Quake and Wolf haven't helped things, either internally or with external perception. I think it's good for Raven to be able to put this chapter behind and move on. A lot of good guys have moved themselves up into lead positions, and the project lead from Quake 4 (who is hands-down one of the best guys I've had the chance to work with over the years) is back calling the shots on a new project as opposed to running clean-up duty on Wolf. They've got a new unannounced project going and still have Singularity coming out early next year that, if it goes well, could start a solid new chapter for the company. Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted August 23, 2009 Report Posted August 23, 2009 Not an entirely convincing review from what was said. Raven seem to be going downhill a bit? Raven's games never seem to follow a set "bad to good" or "Good to bad" curve as they become available. They just waver around good to decent, occasionally, like Soldier of Fortune 2, dipping to mediocre. Quote

Jetsetlemming Posted August 23, 2009 Report Posted August 23, 2009 I can only comment on what I've actually played, obviously. The only Star Wars game I've ever gotten was on the N64. Quote
-HP- Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 What's with this fucking game and the mouse movement!!! It's like the mouse sensitivity dinamicaly changes... I disabled the aim assist (why the fuck is this even here?!), vsync, lowering the res, and it still behaves very weird. I tell you, the fucking sens changes from second to second, and the vertical axis is more slow than the horizontal! gg Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 The vertical axis is definitely slower than the horizontal as that's how most pro RTCW MP players played apparently. There's separate cvars for X and Y axis sensitivity, though I dunno what they are. There's a .cfg hidden deep within your Documents and Settings folder because obviously you'd never, ever want to alter it, right? By the way I hear there's a line you can enter there (or set it as a launch option) to enable the Gamestop preorder bonus flamethrower weapon. Something like "getflamedlc 1". Quote
-HP- Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 The vertical axis is definitely slower than the horizontal as that's how most pro RTCW MP players played apparently. Ah so... basically. They removed the health packs, and replaced them with autoregen. They changed the MP experience completely from what we had from the previous RTCW. But.... They keep the vertical axis slower to please the hardcore fans? (...) From what I played, It doesn't look anything special, although I want to finish it, then I'll give some feedback. But first, I need to get the freaking mouse working... I tried lowering the res to 1280* and deactivating the vsync. And It's slightly better, but not perfect. But I get ugly aliasing, low res and a lot of screen tearing. fuck sakes... I guess I'll wait for a patch. Quote
Patrick_H Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 What? They didn't remove the health packs from MP. The medic has a separate Veil ability called Healing Aura, but he still has the packs. Autoregen on your character is only in SP. Quote
-HP- Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 That i don't know cos I didn't tried MP yet. I just assumed wrong then. Quote
dux Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 So far: Pros: Don't know what people are moaning about in reviews about it looking dated, t his is the best the Doom 3 engine has been - looks great! Apart from some minor thing here and there, obviously it can't compete with crysis but it still looks damn good. Idtech 4 forever! MP40 is like that of RTCW, so that's good as it rocked. Music is really nice! Voice acting is good too. Nice level architecture, something Raven never fails at. If only all of the game were as good as it's architecture Cons: The veil sucks. HARD. Total gimmick that really isn't needed at all. I use it only when I'm forced to. Health regen. Yeah. Crouch toggle. Can't turn it off. Mouse axis feels totally screwed up. All I use is the mp40 with upgrades, kinda makes it all a bit meh. The upgrades... no. A good idea, sure, but doesn't work in wolf in my opinion and makes your weapons far too strong. I'm destroying legions with an mp40. I'm only 3 missions in so more to come Quote
Zyn Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Wait until you get the BFG-like weapon. "Oh noes big scary dude and lots of germans *BLAM* ok they're all dead now". Quote
