-HP- Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 It's not all id's fault tho: http://twitter.com/#!/CatalystCreator "All - don't use the current Rage performance driver - package includes very old OGL files, that's why you're seeing corruption etc." "New Rage driver with proper OGL component will be posted later today" Quote
Skjalg Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 People frapsing and saying that they see texture popping is so stupid since the textures are loaded from the same hardrive that they are trying to save a bmp to every frame. No wonder its slow. Its kind of like blaming low fps on the game you're playing while running 3dsmax, photoshop CS3, udk, unity, cryengine 3, 3 instances of visual studio and watching a replay of your favourite starcraft 2 match on youtube on your second monitor. People are seeing the texture pop-in and then frapsing it to show it to other people brosef. Also what kind of scrub only has one hard drive? It looks like, from what I've seen/heard, that the game isn't caching textures that are offscreen/behind the player/etc, and reloading that stuff every time the player turns around again instead of remembering them. Given that the texture pop-in is way less noticeable on Xbox judging by the giant bomb quicklook, that has to be some kind of bug. They only released the x86 version, so the game can only use 2GB, but still that's 4x what's available to an xbox game... Quote

They only released the x86 version, so the game can only use 2GB, but still that's 4x what's available to an xbox game... there's a reason on why it is the way it is, and the game runs much better on consoles than it runs on PC, It's usually the other way around I know. I don't know the technical details, people talked about it at work and I've read it somewhere as well, but basically since the consoles have a fixed hardware it's much easier to allocate the textures in the memory and address them when the player needs to see them. On PC, due to different hardwares, different GPUs, different drivers, etc, this just isn't possible, hence why It's a bit problematic to run on PC and that's why id recommends everyone playing on PC to get the latest drivers for their graphics card. Carmack talked about it more in depth during his talk. Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 The latest graphics card drivers for AMD, that were supposedly specifically released for Rage, are broken, because AMD's driver people are really super dumb apparently! They included super old and broken OpenGL files. Later today apparently they're going to rerelease the drivers properly. Also: lol Quote
Bunglo Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Maybe when it's $30 I'll think about picking it up. Quote

Jetsetlemming Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Saw someone post this screenshot: It might have to do with the issues on PC. The game thinks it has no extra room for textures and is super aggressively culling everything. Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 Lol the build info/date on the current version of Rage is dated less than 40 minutes before its unlock on Steam I still haven't bought the game but I've spent most of my day following the news and posts about it. It's like a train wreck by someone I considered a god and really hoped would succeed. Quote
Jenn0_Bing Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 I went to a talk from Tim Willits at the Eurogamer Expo, and he showed us that room. He also said there's Doom and Quake rooms to find, but they will be much harder. Quote
Mazy Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 Hmmm so does it work fine with Nvidia cards? I'm almost considering getting it for the 360 with all these issues :G Quote
Warby Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 i have been saying it all along mega textures -> worst idea ever ! Quote
-HP- Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 Well yeah maybe, bit of a gimmick and ahead of it's time even, but the concept on itself it's genius and it's even well implemented, but we need better computers and better consoles to see it's true potential. Todd tweeted both AMD and ATI are working on new drivers as we speak, they did not forgot about the PC crowd. Quote
