2d-chris Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 I hope you're working on the PC version of crysis 2 then chris. not quite sure if you've noticed, but we're shipping a PC game too, on an IP that was born on PC? I'm also not a game designer, I build levels that would be the same no matter what platform we ship on Consoles really doesnt change an FPS as much as you'd think, give or take some balancing and mechnics like auto aim and what not. I think it was DICE who said the biggest mistake they made in Bad Company was assuming they had to make a different game for console players. I hope you're working on the PC version of crysis 2 then chris. Edit: Actually nvm, because remember those initial Cryengine 3 videos where they showed off the game running on all three platforms at once with edits in the editor effecting all three? Doesn't seem like non-tech guys need to worry about individual platforms, which is awesome. idtech5's editor is supposed to do the same thing, shame they're not licensing it. Hope they still release an sdk with rage though. Nope - level designers here very much require quite detailed technical understanding of the consoles and limitations but the engine and art scale according to configs you run Anyway - back on topic please Quote

Most people can't tell the difference between a 2k and a 1k texture tho, but the fps becomes obvious as soon as you press a button on the controller. Quote
D3ads Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 Agreed, there's a mass of difference between 30fps and 60fps. Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 And just about nobody cares about it (except you guys apparently). http://www.insomniacgames.com/blogcast/ ... on/1503082 Quote
Thrik Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 There's obviously a difference, but I can say I'm so used to 30 fps games as a console gamer it really doesn't matter to me. So long as it's a consistent 30 fps it's completely playable and looks good — and if given the choice between extra detail and 60 fps rather than 30 fps, I'd go with the extra detail. The most striking example I remember is Metal Gear Solid 3, which they intentionally developed for 30 fps as opposed to Metal Gear Solid 2 which was developed for 60. As I played it right after its predecessor the difference was very striking, but after a few minutes of play it's unnoticeable. Totally worth it for what was at the time a gorgeous game. Nobody who knows what they're on about is saying you can't tell the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps. It's just that the difference isn't particularly damaging, and when factored into the many things that have to be balanced and compromised when it comes to console gaming it's a fairly light sacrifice to make as opposed to things like resolution, anti-aliasing, overall detail, etc — all things which have been messed around with significantly this gen. Jetsetlemming Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 I personally can't tell the difference unless it's changing live in front of me. I thought Crysis was running at at least like 45-50FPS running around the first few levels because it looked smooth to me, and then I turn on FRAPS and it's like 25FPS average Now, if a 60FPS game drops to 25FPS because lots of stuff is going on or you stare into a HoM or something, then yes, that is noticeable. But, say theoretically, you took two groups of random people, and sat them down in front of a game, with one group seeing the game with an artificial 30fps limit, and the other with 60fps, and ask them what they thought of performance, the 30fps group is not gonna complain compared to 60fps group. If you let them play it then some people will notice, but not many, more if you use a first person game, but still, I think the majority of the group would be entirely unmoved by the difference. Skjalg Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 Different games needs different FPS's. You can play splinter cell or other slow paced games with 30 fps with no problem, but with crysis you'll notice the 25 fps if you use your speed and run fast through the jungle. (They've masked the lag a bit with their blur, but it was still very noticable for me). If you play QuakeWorld with anything less than 60 fps then you die a lot more Quote

I was being sarcastic It's okay though chris. You have been in Germany a long time now. Quote
Thrik Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 Really what matters with frame rate is consistency. If it's jumping up and down, even if it's not too much it can get very jarring. If however it's totally consistent then the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps isn't a big deal. Quote
ElectroSheep Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Try Wipeout Fury alone with 60fps and with a friend on multiplayer with 30 Fps and you will see the difference Quote
Gloglebag Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 I personally do not feel or see much difference between 30 and 60 fps. Quote
alecmoody Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 ":i73ikree]wtf man.. blurryness?! I hope the drop in texel density isn't because of something lame like ID realizing the final build of the game will be 70gb or something. Quote
Corwin Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Gotta agree these shots don't look good enough to be featured like this. I mean what's up with that metal skeleton in the center of the shot, increase the max view distance to its spine please? That said I still dig the art style a lot. Quote
