It shouldn't be an effect it should be part of establishing an aesthetic. Aesthetic decisions should be functional/communicative and not tacked onto an image for seemingly no reason.

I agree the original is a little brown but I think that's more a function of whats in frame than the actual color balance of the scene.

I'm expecting this to be a decent polished game but nothing more.

What more are there to it? What would you expect to see from a id game?

- absolutely astonishing graphics *check*

- interesting gameplay mechanics *check*

- varied environments (exteriors and interiors) *check*

- free roam *check*

- nice weapons and gadgets *check*

- even some driving to break up from the shooting *check*

And it's a fucking ID game we're talking about here.

I'm just happy to see it's not a plain old shooter like a lot of games out there. We live in a shooter era, and a lot of the shooters you see nowadays are almost an insult to the player.

Take KZ2 as an example, (When I first played it, i actually enjoyed it, but given the fact I'm a graphics whore, that's prolly the reason why) it really irritates me because all you do is shoot, shoot, shoot; there's nothing else involved, no other mechanics, no interesting gameplay elements to break up from the samey shooter, and there's no gadgets in games anymore! No more gamepley layers on top of the basic.

I'm playing SS2 atm (yes, for the first time) and it makes me genuinely sad to see what we've become as an industry, It's like we're returning to the roots again. Sometimes there'sa few gems that come out, like Bioshock with great gameplay elements that makes you think for a second within the game and actually challenge you, but even that one is just a rip-of of SS2.

Yo, calm it kermit. I expected them not to adopt everything that's come before. Today's games show them up as very generic minded. I'm not denying that they make good solid games. But when they make their new game, why does it have to be taken from all the other new games that have come from the past 3 years? I'm sure I will buy it and purchase it and enjoy it. But I'm just disappointed that they can't think up anything new and stimulating anymore. It feels to me as if their designers are either afraid to go balls to the wall or are just lacking ideas. Is everyone going to tell me now that I'm being too harsh and it's impossible to think up anything new and interesting these days? Bollocks I say, there's always something new to be imagined. It just depends if you do indeed have the imagination to realise it. Or lots of drugs.

I dunno, id kinda stopped being relevant gameplay-wise after Romero was fired and Tom Hall quit... the reason the first id games (doom, quake, commander keen, etc) were so fun and innovative was that because the id guys had a lot of fun working on those games. id looked like a pretty boring place to work at after Romero left, and many guys left because they couldn't stand Carmack's attitude. Of course things must be pretty different now.

I know Romero's a douchebag full of himself but we need to give the man some credits.

That's the image I have of id after reading masters of doom, I could be wrong, I wasn't there to witness the facts.

Still looking forward to Rage though! Even if the gameplay sucks the technology is gonna be amazing, just like Doom 3.

Are you talkin Fallout 3/Borderlands, cause other than surface level similarities, it doesn't look to play or feel like either of those games. Can't right it off cause it falls into a genre.

When he shot the water, I smirked to myself and though, why not just go and rip the hand model from bioshock while you're at it, guys. I just think are so many other options they could have gone with than a a cliché apocalyptic desert. But I suppose that's the new iD now though, right? Make a generic new ip and bash to death your old ones as they know they can't ever make anything ever again that could top their old stuff in terms of design and ideas.

I largely agree with you. Their tech was (and still is) top notch, but gameplay wise, nothing has particularly interested me for a long time. I played a lot of Quake 3 but, as great a game as it was, it was just a refinement of an existing formula. Doom 3 was a snooze-fest. Hopefully RAGE will shake things up a bit and re-announce id as a gameplay innovator but I doubt it.

I'd be totally ok with id going back to making straight forward action shooters. Show those young whippersnappers that Halo and Gears aren't the only games in town to emulate. I'd fucking love a new old Doom renaissance in game design. Gimme lightning fast character movement, ten guns at once, hundreds of things to kill per minute over hiding behind cover and waiting for your shields to recharge any day of the week.

But Rage is ok, too :P Day one purchase for me from what I've seen so far.

I think a lot of these concerns will be put to rest about id's direction in design and innovation when Rage is released. They've really expanded their teams and brought in a lot of new blood since Zenimax/Bethesda bought them.
