stefantemp Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 hello again, i know that cs is oldschool here but i want so show you my cs maps because i want to know you opinion on them. i want to know if these are good\mediu\bad\ugly\nice\... maps. this is my first released map (xs_aim_map_deluxe). ive made it about 2 years ago. its simple and it has a very good gameplay: xs_aim_map_deluxe my second release was kzro_smalltemple made for the kz mod. in this map you have to jump your way up from the start point to the end point of the map: kzro_smalltemple my next map was fy_snow_pRO. i made this map because i got tired of the old snow map. i've only changed the textures, the sky and the weapons arrangement: fy_snow_pRO next ive tried to make something different. in ka_perfection_yard you can kill your enemy only with a headshot or a backstab: ka_perfection_yard next its my funniest map that ive made (awp_poker). the texture were made by me (exept the cards and the card deck witch ive found on the net): awp_poker and my last map (aim_platforms_classic) it very simple but has a very pro gameplay. i saw a match between 2 clans on this map and it was amazing: aim_platforms_classic any feedback (good or bad) is better then no feedback so plz feel free to say anything regarding to these maps Quote
hessi Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 you said you were posting maps. all i see is shit this might sound hard to you, but i am SO SICK of those bullshit fun-/what-ever-maps. how dare you post in a place where the usual quality level is like 1000times higher than the kind of maps you post. i am talking of full maps (de_, cs_, dod_, ....) that take months of hard work. -HP- Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 hessi was a bit harsh, yeah. But partially, I agree with him. Quote
hessi Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 despite the things i mentioned in my first post: + he has lighting in his maps - lighting is always grey and frustrating + he uses correctly aligned textures - he doesn't follow the settings in the architecture sure its above the average beginner map, but the over all quality of his maps is beginner level. so yeah better tell him the truth. stefantemp Posted July 6, 2008 Author Report Posted July 6, 2008 you said you were posting maps. all i see is shit this might sound hard to you, but i am SO SICK of those bullshit fun-/what-ever-maps. how dare you post in a place where the usual quality level is like 1000times higher than the kind of maps you post. i am talking of full maps (de_, cs_, dod_, ....) that take months of hard work. i know that the maps look like sh** compaired with the work that i've seen here but i post them because i wanna know if i'm on the right track. the first map is made about 2 years ago but after that map ive stoped mapping and i re-engage in cs mapping about 6 months ago (plus i didnt map constantly). so as you can see i don't have that much experience and every thing that i leard to do in hammer ive learnd it myself. sorry if i offended anyone here and if you think this thread is a disgrace for this forum u can delete it. i don't mind. but i have a some question: is this forum only for experts?? if not where can i post if am a newbie at mapping?? if its only for experts, can i post from time to time some maps to see if my mapping skills advanced?? where can i learn to map like u guys?? how long did it tooked you to be very good at mapping (from the basic room like me to the amazing work that ive saw here)?? and much more questions but i shoud probably start a thread with these questions in offtopic. the reason ive join this community is because ive wanna lear how to map like you guys. and buy the way hessi, your words inspired me. they made me realize that i dont know sh** about mapping and i have to work hard if i want to map like you guys. hessi Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 .... your words inspired me. they made me realize that i dont know sh** about mapping and i have to work hard if i want to map like you guys. that's already a good start. try being as critical as possible to yourself! don't try to find excuses like "i am new at this.". being new is fine, but that won't change the bar i measure stuff on. hopefully you are willing to prove to me/us that you have still hidden talents. feel free to post in the WIP forum all your new project screenshots. Note: never show your old stuff, except it was top-notch when it was made! Quote
Warby Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 i am rather opinion less when it comes to those kind of simple fun maps to be honest. but as people said there is lighting in these maps, the textures look aligned and well chosen for their purposes, so i guess i have to give it my blessing for the execution because that is much more than i have seen in the handful of "FUN" maps that i do know. also i must applaud you for your respond to hessis admittedly harsh post ! (that i kind of agree with to some extend) when i read hessis post i had a precise image in my head what your respond would look like. luckily it looked it looked completely different it was non confrontational, polite and honest. and shows actual willingness to learn. so i am putting my faith into you that you will rise with the challenge and achieve greatness ! ...don't disappoint me ! welcome to mapcore Quote
Thrik Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 To be fair though, RD made some excellent 'fun maps' that also looked good. It's possible to make such a map that also looks good, and if those are the types of maps you like to make then you should focus on doing that. Quote
DvS Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 Note: never show your old stuff, except it was top-notch when it was made! If I may expand on this... Never post a picture of something that you need to make excuses for, if you know what's wrong with it, fix it. When it leaves your care and enters public domain, it should be as good as you can possibly make it, then it's up to the experts to tell you what's wrong and how you can fix it. Quote
aaron_da_killa Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 I think the maps are cool, I could imagine having alot of fun on them for sure. The poker map is very creative, it reminds me of the rats maps. Look, these maps aren't good artistically, and that may or may not have been a real priority for you, but I can imagine having fun with them, and hey, some of the maps have pretty decent brush work . I think the first map, third map and the poker map would be the most fun for me. The second map has some pretty decent brush work, I mean its a pretty linear map with linear brush work, but its not a flat wall and you have made bricks that are slightly popped out with those interesting stacked crates, I guess thats the style of the map. As some other members have said, yes you have lighting, you have aligned textures, it doesn't just look like a whole bunch of s**t crammed into a map and your maps kind of seem to belong to this genre of maps that are not considered maps by people like us, but among that genre, I would say your maps would stand out quite a bit. You seem to be willing to learn and have an open mind about your maps, as far as I am concerned, you deserve to be here and your place shouldn't be questioned. I'll download the maps and give them a bit of a play through, if you want my advice, it seems you have killbox style gameplay in check (which for counter-strike there is an exception for), try making a map that has this but also looks beautiful, you might have to spend a month or so on the map but that's completely fine. Think of a theme you want to do, if your doing a forest theme, most defiantly look up pictures of various forests on Google images. Think of what you want in the gameplay, you could have it killbox styled if you wanted to, or you could go for something more, when making the map, these are somethings to consider: - Vertical gameplay - map flow - overall height variation (floors, walls, ceilings) - weapon placement and distances between spawns and weapons - places of interest in the map (maybe a really good weapon or good sniping spot) - make the map as less linear as possible - design of the map (if you have more than 2 large spaces, you don't want them to see eachother to keep frame rates as high as possible) - ambient sounds in the map - lighting - attention to detail (small details that not or players may notice, not obvious details) Ofcourse there are more things, but these are just some from the top of my head. And yeah, this is a mapping website and is pretty different to fps banana, you may get a 10/10 on fps banana but if you want a real opinion on your maps, than defiantly come to sites like this. Look around at some of the other maps, these are people that are serious about their and I'd say quite alot of them (probably an understatement) want to enter the games industry doing what they are doing now, I know I would like to. Good work tripl_ecks, I certainly wouldn't consider your maps bad ! edit: Just had a look here, and that looks good. Quote
Minos Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 It's not bad making fun maps, if that's what makes you happy. CS Mapping is all about fun, that's why it's considered a hobby and not a profession. Let's not go all "serious business" here please. Quote
