Waldo Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Anyone know of any other MMOs being built on the CryEngine (FarCry 1 engine) platform? I'd heard about NCSofts Aion but no others.
FrieChamp Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 Haven't heard of any others, may I ask why you ask?
Waldo Posted June 26, 2008 Author Report Posted June 26, 2008 I'm working with some people on an educational MMO project right now, and one of the real issues is choosing an engine. It has to deal with huge spaces, but equally as important it has to run on "old" systems. If you're going to put a game into a school, you're going to have to aim at a lower system spec. CryEngine (1) seems like it could have some potential, but the idea of building a whole MMO framework for it (persistent world, instancing, etc.) just sounds like a major (pain in the ass) undertaking. I'm curious if anyone's already done it before and even had some licensable tech.
FrieChamp Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 If NCSoft doesn't want to assist you, chances aren't looking so good on that prospect. They did it, but I don't think any other company licensed CE1 for developing an MMO.
e-freak Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 what about ue2 - there are some working MMOs with that engine and it's even more scalable than ce1.
m8nkey Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 I stumbled accross this only yesterday: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mabinogi_%28video_game%29 Official Site (haven't checked it out, it's blocked from my work): http://mabinogi.nexon.net It's a Korean anime MMO that uses the Source engine. It's free to download so I'm going to check it out over the weekend. I can't imagine the Source engine being suitable for an MMO, one thing I found very irritating about Hellgate London was the insane amount of instancing and loading screens. It really effects the players immersion, an essential part of an MMO.
