⌐■_■ Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 ":2m01j0os]I still don't get it why you guys want to limit this compo to a single engine/game, you'r missing the point. kk, you use Cryengine 2.0, I'll use the half-life 1 engine, let's see who ends up making the prettiest level. I get what you're saying but I think the relativity of that sorta thing may be a bit of a stretch? You eliminate a lot of ambiguity in terms of what the 'best' map is when it's all on a level playing field. why? were all gamers here, i trust we know how to judge a map (wich is more then appearance on itself, like atmosphere, creativity, gameplay etc) and then again, its us who have to choose who we think is the winner. i for one would rate paranoia map higher then a ''13 in a dozen'' farcry map (wich may look nicer in terms of graphics). so, i dont see the problem? i suggest a moderator starts a poll, before this initiative dies a slow death. Buddy Posted July 8, 2008 Author Report Posted July 8, 2008 The only problem is that most of people judge maps by screenshots, we would need to go for some sort of diferent judging than before and make people actually play these maps. Portal Contest would eliminate these problems somehow but on the other hand if it be a 'scene' contest there should be no problems with it at all! Quote
e-freak Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Valve tech is also positive because the number of people around here who can actually play the entries would be much higher than the number of people who own Crysis, UT3, Doom3 and a Valve Game. Don't know if this works but Portal The First Slice should be enough to run Portal Custom-Maps (if you preload the full game it is?) Quote
⌐■_■ Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 maybe higher voting standards? i.e. instead of a poll everyone writes a (short) revieuw of the map with pros and cons (and numericly rate maps). this way people will have to invest a serious amount of time into voting wich may filter out the jokers and stimulate better feedback. the downside would be that noone would bother. -HP- Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 the downside would be that noone would bother. Yes, that's what I fear as well... (Look at the low poly robot compo submitions) Quote
Buddy Posted July 8, 2008 Author Report Posted July 8, 2008 Yes, we need prizes. Thrik will go and buy Porn VHS tapes and winner will get them all. Quote
⌐■_■ Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 somebody make a fucking poll already damnit :ssj: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=11482 Quote
Erratic Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Is the prestigious Mapcore Spotlight not prize enough? Quote
ReNo Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 I never got that for Weaver despite winning the last contest But then Weaver was fun enough to build that I didn't really care I reckon a Portal map would be a good plan, as I think we'll see quite a few entries. Doesn't need custom content to look good (I reckon most folks will pull off the simple portal style with basically Valve level of quality), and encourages originality in gameplay and design as opposed to just visuals. Anyone who doesn't have portal can leave . I think portal is the best choice, puzzle design is more interesting than stunning visuals, which not everyone has the skills or time to pull off. Quote
Jetsetlemming Posted July 14, 2008 Report Posted July 14, 2008 My own little idea: make something that doesn't look like it came from the engine it uses. On GoW, don't make some muddied blue-grey-brown mansion. On Source, don't make a wrecked city lit in fluorescent yellow and teal. On FarCry, don't make a jungle island... etc. For that (optional) extra paradoxical kick (and to level the playing field) - stock assets only. Bonus points if it looks like an actual map and not just some diorama you threw together. I love this idea. It's pretty easy to do in Source, though, I think, since there's also wilderness beaches and cliffs, sci-fi alien buildings, horror villages filled with zombies, mines, etc. Quote
