Looking through for good theme on engine any you like...

What he said

I 2nd that :)

Best way to reach an as broad public as possible, I guess.

Although it would seem hard to compare different engines to each other, I think it would really need to kick the 'mapper' alive in anyone competing.

If we do a contest that's not bound to a certain engine, then the topic should be something that relies less on visuals but rather on fun and innovative gameplay (and how much you turned the engine upside down).

I think we should have a themed map contest in which the goal is to create the best atmosphere in a map. That way, be it Unreal, Source, or whatever engine you like to use, you can show your own skills in that particular engine. I don't think the winner should be based on the map that looks the best, it should be the map that 'feels' the best, when played. The map that best portrays the theme of the contest.

Mind you, a lot of people can't be arsed to download maps and will only vote based on visuals alone.

Speaking honestly... I would probably only play a handful of the entries and judge the rest by screenshots. So let's just embrace what we are and do some sort of visual oriented competition.

My own little idea: make something that doesn't look like it came from the engine it uses. On GoW, don't make some muddied blue-grey-brown mansion. On Source, don't make a wrecked city lit in fluorescent yellow and teal. On FarCry, don't make a jungle island... etc. For that (optional) extra paradoxical kick (and to level the playing field) - stock assets only. Bonus points if it looks like an actual map and not just some diorama you threw together.

We got a contest then. You pretty much described your wild west map :D:celebrate:

...On Build, don't make a 1996 looking level.

Well of course that's where my own interests are!... but I actually wasn't planning on participating - I just want to see cooler and better work coming out of the community so I can steal other peoples' ideas and claim them as my own be inspired and love my fellow man. :v

... Or conversely, how about we have a contest to see who can make the awesomest, most derivative, dilapidated military-cargo crate factory. Bonus points for only using brown / blue / gray. (strangely that's starting to sound appealing...)

good to know that you all like the idea of making a theme on any engine...

so I suggest not exactly a theme but a category - I would be very happy if the contest will be based on realism (no alien space themes like in some UT themes)

and the deadline... how about 1st week of october? I know that's a lot of time but we have vacations - give us a break from mapping :)

How about something with set width's but no height limit to get some vertical action going. Or perhaps a theme or "Art Reworked" where you take a well known (or not) piece of art and apply its theme and stuff to a map...cue millions of Salvador Dali-esque style pieces.

Keep in mind a lot of us do not have vacations though ;)

Yeah I know and I think that I'm one of them too so the deadline should be anough late to get as much maps as possible...

btw. "Art Reworked" sounds great!

Mind you, I like this idea, but in all honesty whoever uses Cryengine 2 will win this hands down
