I think raytracing could be used for better things then some fancy mirrors and accurate light. Carmack thinks about implenting raytracing in ID tech 6 it to store 3d data and basically create something along the lines of mega geometry (he even mentioned this earlyer, at the end of the Rage/ID Tech5 presentation) .
