Sentura Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 so yeah, i've been working on this thing for the past 10 days or so. for lack of inspiration in names, i just called it "a simple portal map". this is still a beta in the sense that you can probably get stuck, but i am working on ironing all the issues out. it would be awesome if a few people would want to test it and report whatever type bugs they may find (visual, or progress blocks, etc.). screens: please note that the shots are a bit dated, ingame architecture may vary. download: http://files.sentura.net/maps/simpleportal.bmz (17 mb) updated the map: - it should no longer be possible to get stuck on the very last puzzle. - the radio will now dissolve properly. - challenges have been added. simply remove your old folder from the /portal/maps/ directory, then enter the game and import the .bmz file as a bonus map, and you should be able to play it. enjoy etc. Quote
Freak Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 that large room in the last screen looks pretty cool, i´ll maybe play it the next 3 days Quote
Josch Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Hey. I played the map but reached a point where i don`t know what to do. I made my way upwards to the upper stage with the compagnion-cube, the regular cube and the turret. I destroyed the glass-floor and now I dont know how to continue the level But till this point its a pretty good map with good optics and fun. The map looks very good, although it is this well known portal-theme we saw a thousand times already. I would prefer a map with a new theme Quote
Sentura Posted June 9, 2008 Author Report Posted June 9, 2008 there is a door on the other side of the room, follow that door's strip to where it ends. as for the classic portal aesthetic; i wanted a map where everyone could follow, and as such left it very much in the same style as the original game to let everyone (newer players alike) have an easier go. if i had picked a different setting, there would have been more confusion and i would have to undergo basic tutorial steps to make each player familiarize themselves with the new environment, which again would block my possibility of making this puzzle in the time i spent for it. m8nkey Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 I thoroughly enjoyed portal but personally, I had my fill simply finishing it and don't go actively looking for maps for it. That said, this looks like a respectable release. Admitedly I gave up after getting stuck for a few minutes but what I did play was enjoyable. As it's all about the puzzles, I don't think you need to add custom content to produce a good map and as you said it could actually hinder or complicate the gameplay. I only have one crit. I noticed some missing materials on my system. I thought it may have been the cubemaps but I rebuilt them and the problem persisted. Here's a screenshot of an effected area I noticed in your screens this problem isn't there. Quote
Sentura Posted June 10, 2008 Author Report Posted June 10, 2008 yeah i have had the same problem and i'm not sure what is causing it -- though it only happens every once in a while. in addition, the chrome pillars for stairs and movable surfaces are non reflective until you buildcubemaps; i'm not really sure how to fix this. i've been looking everywhere for answers. also please note that you can only actually get stuck near the end puzzle. up until then there should not be a problem in completing the level.
