Thrik Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Weird, but kind of understandable. The media and articles I saw about Conviction did look remarkably un-Splinter Cell, seeming better suited to some new license. I think they tried so hard to do something new that they did in fact end up making an entirely new game, free of essentially everything that drew people to its predecessors. Didn't even look like Sam Fisher. Quote
Section_Ei8ht Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Being a Splinter Cellaholic, I've been looking forward to this since it was first announced. Sure it doesn't look like Sam Fisher anymore, but Splinter Cell is at a critical point in the franchise. They can keep making games with different stories using the same formula they used for 4 games (5 if you count Essentials on PSP) and risk everyone complaining that they are just milking the franchise, or they can try something new and risk everyone complaining that they're ruining a proven formula (I shall dub this the "Yahtzee Paradox") Personally I can go either way with this, but in terms of the changes they've made, I like the idea of seeing Sam Fisher in a Jason Bourne/Assassin's Creed style setting. I think it will add so much more to the character. In SC 1 and 2, we didn't really get to see much of the Sam Fisher character. Sure we saw the family-man side of him with Sara, but it was still a little dry. Then Chaos Theory came along and we got to see the humor and learn more about the morality of Fisher. Double Agent pushed the bar even further when it started playing with his emotions. I think what they're doing with Conviction will allow us to see more of the true Sam Fisher. Plus all the added combat stuff and more Assassin's Creed they're making it is a welcome addition in my book because Assassin's Creed was fucking awesome (although I'm sure some of you will jest at that comment). This is just my two cents and can be taken with a grain of salt. I just wish they would release the damn game already! Edit: Oh damn it!I just now read skdr's link. Now I'm pissed. Edit Edit: Oh good: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=141197 Quote
Izuno Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 I like the idea of Splinter Cell staying true to what made the series great. Being that ghost in the darkness is sweet and I'd like to do more. Sure, they should evolve the gameplay and make it awesomer if possible, but if they want to make a modern day Assassin's Creed type game, just do it. Make a new franchise. Or shit, make an actual spinnoff of Assassin's Creed set in current time or near future. I do realize that Splinter Cell brand name carries weight and they don't want to piss it away, but that's nature of the market place. All franchises tend to wax and wane. Just go with it and every so often come up with a new franchise and put quality work into it. Quote
-HP- Posted July 26, 2009 Author Report Posted July 26, 2009 Hey there!!! nothing better than a bit of grave digging on a sunday... I was checking if we already had a Splinter Cell Conviction thread, and although we do, it's still the old "Splinter Cell: Conviction". it's amazing how this game changed... and I'm glad they did, the E3 trailer was the shit! Anyways, no one posted the latest trailer shown at comic con 09, so here it is: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/sdcc- ... cell/53101 Quote
FrieChamp Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 So it's basically "The Bourne Conspiracy" now? Quote
2d-chris Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 Am I the only one who finds it boring to have lots of characters on screen at once? It seems the games industry is turned on by the technical challenges it involves even if the gameplay reward is so out of place. Wonder if it's using same engine as AC Games looks pretty though even if mass crowds seem out of place for splintercell. Quote
Steppenwolf Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 The game doesn't look as good as AC2 but i like the realistic approach that they take style wise. We need more mature games like this. As for crowds in games i think the problem is that we are still very much in the uncanny valley with that but someone has to go in that direction. I think it will be awesome when we have games where the crowds appear and behave absolutely believable. Quote
JohnC Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 I view the gameplay footage I've seen as proof that all third person games are: 1. Designed almost completely for consoles, and; 2. Given camera tips from Michael Bay. Which is unfortunate. I always loved third person games on the PC, and why anyone would want this sort of constantly skewed, wooshy camera is beyond me. Quote
Grinwhrl Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 New Preview, well from a a bit ago, but I've been busy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= Quote
Section_Ei8ht Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 It needs to be February 23rd already. Quote
