-HP- Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 http://kotaku.com/5057227/how-fallout-3 ... n-oblivion Still have doubts Fallout3 wont live up to It's predecessors, that article will clear it up for you! Very good read! Only 3 more weeks to go! Quote
Chunks Posted October 2, 2008 Author Report Posted October 2, 2008 I saw this earlier, I stopped reading after he said that he had never played a fallout game before. How is he supposed to be convincing anybody? More like reaffirming oblivon fans that the game will be good. I hate game "journalists". /rant I need to get off my ass and go preorder the collectors edition, though... can't wait. Quote
dux Posted October 2, 2008 Report Posted October 2, 2008 I never played the first two Fallouts I stopped reading there, too. Quote
2d-chris Posted October 2, 2008 Report Posted October 2, 2008 Guys, game developers are not always major gaming nerds, there is a big difference between playing games and having the skills to make them. In the entertainment industry it's VERY common for people to be hired for jobs without previously playing or being experts in the given IP. You can have all the knowledge of the original titles, but that doesnt make you a good developer. Don't get me wrong, if your on a project like this it's a given that you should play the originals at some point, but it's not a requirement to be hired on a project. I'd prefer to hire very skilled individuals that I get on with, rather than a person who knows allot about fallout yet can't gel with a team. I know which one would benifit the project more Quote
KoKo5oVaR Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 I just played the game on XBOX 360 last Saturday at a videogame festival in Paris. There was a communication guy from Bethesda at the stand to answer people's questions and especially, to guide you through the demo . I played a bit with his nerves and this was actually pretty funny . The first thing i noticed is the emptiness of the universe, i don't know if it was because i played an unfinished demo or not. But it's basically like Oblivion : an environment about the same size with some monsters scattered around. Sometimes you stumble upon a wrecked city with 2 or 3 dragoon ants to make it a challenge, i asked if it's possible to scavenge items from these places, apparently you can, but i didn't found anything.. Everything looked really generic. Secondly i found the combat parts really deceiving, the game is a FPS, but compared to STALKER to take an exemple , a really bad FPS. Once again, it's oblivion with a gun; Including the AI. You got action points you can use whenever you want to shoot accurately at your enemies, but there's not any real tactical aspect in that, It's more like a powerup you can choose to use or not. I visited megaton, insulted the sheriff, saw a brahmin, killed a bunch of dogs and molerats. Then i wanted to see how far i could go if i was walking straight forward, the guy told me there's about 40 minutes to walk from one point of the map to another, so i gave up. I saw a little children wandering and i asked : "Can i kill that kid ?" "Yeah go for it" I tried to get an accurate shot in his groin but the option wasn't there anymore, so i shot him into the head. Nothing happened, the kid just ran away from me. I was looking for items in a city, but didn't found anything, so i started to look at texture bugs, collision problems, holes in the geometry of the environment and stuff like that . Once the communication guy saw it, he told me : "Alright you played enough, there's some people waiting to try" That was my Fallout3 adventure. Sorry to deceive you guys, honestly; i'm actually not worried about the fact that FALLOUT3 will be a good sequel, but the fact that it will be not a good game at all. But yeah, i didn't saw any real RPG parts, quests, investigations etc, that's what was missing. Hopefully, the game will be better than what i saw. @2D chris, I have to agree with you to a large extent, but to make a game to please nerds, you need to be a nerd yourself Quote

Sentura Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 a most interesting point of view. the world being such a huge part of the game, this sounds extremely lacking. i wish i had the chance to play the game prior to buying it if it really is like this. don't get me wrong, i love fallout and its universe, but if it's just an empty environment with alot of generic monsters, i might as well pick up halo or some other shitty fps and play that. I was checking out a lot of trailers from Fallout 3 today for the first time. I have seen Fallout 2 and i think i tried Fallout for about 5 min so i was actually never really interested. But today i checked some out and it seems like a great game. But then i read they will not release a demo, so here is what you do. Wait 6-8 months after the release and the rumours about how good it was NOT will have spread and not many people will buy it any more and they will put it out as a lowprice game GL. Quote
Buddy Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 Fallout 1&2 is addictive, if you'd spend more time with it back then you would still be playing it now. Quote

st0lve Posted October 4, 2008 Report Posted October 4, 2008 2d; For the game developers that got anything to do with art or code, no it's not really important, you can get all of that from Interplays concept art etc. etc. BUT: For the dialogue, story and all of that, you NEED to know what the Fallout universe is like, you simply cannot get it right, or even close to right without having played the games.. It's like selling the Half Life IP to someone who haven''t EVER played the game, and they try to make a sequel... Koko, scary read edit; I stopped at "I never played the first two Fallouts and have very little sentimental attachment to Pip-boy, Vault 101, or Dogmeat." Does really ANYONE have any attachment to Vault 101?????!?!?? Quote

Yes you are right, however, my point really was that you don't have to be expert (or in this case have played the games) to be hired on the team in the first place Professionals learn and adapt very quickly. I think any designer would understand the importance of research if you where asked to work on a sequal Quote
Taylor Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 The Fallout 3 designers have played the original Fallout titles, that’s the first thing they would do when they were given the project. While it’s nice to assume the worst because they’re touching your favourite franchise, Bethesda aren’t amateurs, Though game developers should preferably be major nerds, especially those in a design or programming fraternity. You ever seen a film director who wasn’t a massive film buff? The best games come from the biggest geeks (a less dirty word), no exceptions. Quote
