As described here, the MapCore attachment settings were modified in March 2008. You can now post 500kb images, you get 15 of them per post, and the thumbnails are optimally sized rather than being tiny.

Below is an example of an inline attachment. It's automatically framed, it's linked to a full-size version, and it includes a caption if you define one.

If you attach some images but don't put them in a particular part of your post, they'll be put at the bottom as seen below. You'll probably prefer to use the inline versions so you can choose where they're displayed and in what order.

let's say I want to put my picture on my own FTP because I post it in like 5 boards and it has a resolution of 293532*24922 because someone wanted cake and now I implent the picture with good ol' img-tag. is this picture resized to 800*600 (or whatever) or will it just demolish the board style again (because we had these high res crysis pictures for example and i had to open every single picture in an extra tab because the board cutted off the edge)

At the moment it only parses files uploaded through the forums, but the image clipping thing does annoy me too and I'm going to look into implementing something that'll produce thumbnails for external images tonight. The thumbnail almost certainly won't be as high-quality as it'll just resize the original live image rather than produce a second thumbnail version, but it'll make sure it gets seen properly.
