I'm making a wingman map based around a rally cup garage. Posting here super early in  the design faze so I have to stay accountable.

Hopefully I can get some sick looking rally car models in to really sell the map. I'm pretty bad at hardsurface modeling though...

MadsenFK reacted to Roald in (CS:GO) de_volver | no idea what the theme or final name should be.
    Hi
Usually people start off with picking a theme for their map before they start on creating the map.
The reason for this is because basicly everything (layout, art, mapname, atmosphere) is based arround the theme you pick.
For me the right order to start a map is:
    1) Pick a theme for your map (and a location/mapname, though mapname can come later)
    2) Gather reference pictures from real life locations, other gamers, movies or what so ever
    3) Draw a layout on paper with the location/theme in mind and already think of what area will become what.
For an example the bombsites are interesting areas, you can already decide how it will look, what the objective is
You can use the references to create more interesting shapes then just paths and walls for your greybox.
    4) Check timings, angles and such basic things ingame (with a friend)
    5) If you are happy with it then get a playtest organised and keep on playtesting/itteration your layout untill it plays well
    6) Now its time to work on the art for your work, apply details and textures to your map
    7) Time for some more playtest and polishing your map
When you do not have a strong plan and vision in mind (step 1  - 3) you will probally end up wandering what to do with your map.
There is a big chance you get stuck by a creative blockade and end up with a map exisiting from meaningless empty corridors and rooms.
This might not be the best workflow (for you), but for me it works well and it is worthfull to try out.

Here is my mapcore topic where you can see the exact progress of my map:
The mistake I made is focusing to much from the start on the theme/art, I would suggest to keep your greybox as simple as possible untill step 6.
    Goodluck with your map!

I think the time has come, Tyrinni is banned for constantly flooding threads with long, boring, pedantic arguments. May this be a second celebratory moment for our community.

    Hey there!

We just released a new update before the deadline is there!
I'd like to thank the awesome staff from the FaceIt Mapcore Hub for the organisation and ofcourse the awesome people for playing the maps and giving us feedback and stats to work with.
For that special thanks to @Thewhaleman & @JimWood for providing the demo parser, its been very useful!
We have done some small layout changes and heard some birds whispering they want more colors, so there you have it!
@jd40 & @jakuza have been working their asses off to create new cool assets and doing some more environment work on the map, so a big shout out to those two amazing artists!
Enough talking, time to check out some screens and perhaps have a look ingame!

    Cheers

Even if the ship has an overall gray texture, or is unfinished does not mean it has no visual presentation. In fact, the composition is so strong, the theme so unique that they can easily carry the map on the visual categories. I would assume this map scored very high on Theme and Visual Presentation (40-50 points), and also I wouldn't be surprised if the judges found the gameplay to be somewhat fun and the polish to be acceptable (maybe an average score of 13 for both those categories). Graveyard then probably scored between 66-76 points which for top 10 is likely I would say.
Tynnyri, you should be really excited that a mapper didn't make another "mirage clone" but instead you choose to focus your attention on a splinter in someones project instead of the whole scope.

Why so bitter all the time?
There's nothing in the rules about dev textures, in fact potentially you could have a dev-textured map as finalist. The map just needs to be playable to qualify for the deadline.
you get more points if the map is arted up properly.
In this case I say the scale and overall vision can make up for some missing textures... plus the ship is gonna be grey anyway is not like it's a weird orange block in the middle.

After a thorough review of the Data, we've got one correction to make: Mocha has been added top the Top 10. Thanks to Puddy for double checking. I take full responsibility for this one, it's my mistake.
As for scores, each judge has the full greenlight to release their own scores after the Contest. We feel that is a good balance between transparency and people bickering about the results.

Why you have to do me like that guys 😂. Most defeating feeling is waiting for the compile and the moderation approval to finish as you're powerless to change anything until it's over. This was an inevitability with the crunch the map required. The map has been updated now and all the major bugs fixed. It still won't let me load it through the workshop saying it's failing to find a dedicated server, must be a caching issue because I think it happened before and the BSP works fine for me, so should work fine soon enough.
Just in case the workshop keeps acting up (works fine now), here's the same BSP as on the workshop right now: de_mocha.bsp

Art by @Bevster, layout by @tr0nic. The map is inspired by South American colonial era architecture and regional coffee production. Workshop link.

Although I didn't have enough time to polish the art and gameplay to my desired level, I'm sure the remaining things won't take too long. Current version still has some minor lighting/shading errors on existing content, there's no 3D Skybox yet and the clipping, optimization passes also a bit rudimentary. Hopefully it's nothing gamebreaking. I'm going to update the entry as soon as possible.

    Welcome to Jingshen!
Jingshen is a fictional small village in the beautiful landscapes of Asia. It may seem like a quiet and peaceful place - but watch out! There is trouble on the way to bring mischief and destruction. It won't be quiet anymore very shortly.
Jingshen is a bomb defusal map which was designed to deliver a unique playstyle while being just familiar enough allowing new players to pick it up quickly.
Brought to you by @Freyja  (Environment Art), @Lefty (3D Art) and @El_Exodus (Level Design)
