My only concern is it's not a fair contest, time is a factor - it will discourage people from starting from scratch if people can enter almost finished work?

Hey all!
DE_GAMBIT(greyblock) has been published to the workshop for feedback! - (removed for now - greyblock beta is over - will provide new workshop link in the future)
I'm very excited to have finally released the map for testing - a little history of the map here
I'm looking for some feedback! I am aware there's still lots of 90, 180 degree angles and some tight spaces - this will be changed as I develop areas!
With this map I tried to create some interesting gameplay moments:
Ts can throw grenades, flashes, smokes through the large rolling door windows into CT chokes. Ts can also flash under the rolling door into mid. (will need to highlight these gameplay features more) There are 2 fences on the map that dampen damage when shot through. Ts can snipe from the Van outside into CT mid. CTs can also snipe into mid from jumping on the Forklift near A choke. Double vent system which serves tactically for both teams. Double boost spots for both teams.

I think it's time to show you the new map we are working on...
We ? Yep me and Kikette.
Perhaps you already saw an early overview in the "wip in wip" forum ?
Since this one, we worked, and we are always working hard to increase the gameplay and starting to think about the visual.
You'll see, the thematic is simple : a motel taken by terrorists in Arizona.
Currently we are still working on this version and when we'll think we are good, we'll give you the alpha and we'll ask you to have a playtest...and of course we are impatient

L4D No Mercy Campaign... it felt great to run through in the first days of L4D. Eventually, everyone began to corner camp and abuse of things such as meleeing the door in the Gas station level, elevator bug smoker tongue, tank blocking elevator, and the narrow ladder chokepoints. The campaign is a blast to play on expert though. I love the atmosphere! It is far from perfect but I had so many epic moments that it is one of the most memorable set of maps for me.

You probably just burned out. At some point it happens in all creative fields, to pretty much all creative people I've met. The best thing you can do is take a break -- you could work on something else creative, or just be a bit passive for a while. Maybe look through your steam library and find a singleplayer game you never completed and make it your goal to get through it. Eventually a spark of mapping passion will reignite when you're ready to pick up the hammer again.

Thank you Ugui! I have added a way to go from mid to A-bombsite by going inside one of the buildings and up 2 floors, but I will try to add more elevated gameplay areas later on.
Nexusdog, great point! I started by making a topdown layout:
As you can see it has changed a bit!
This topdown with reference pictures was all I made before I started to create the level.
I started with a quick blockout:
Followed by a more advanced blockout:
After that I did a quick texturing of the level, just so the player could orient themselves better:
And then I started to add props to the buildings:
One thing that I had problems with (and still have) is that I did alot of things to my BSP's that you never should do, like rotating them without snapping. Hammer forces the BSP to align when you compile and it gave my roofs very odd shapes:
I chose to stick with my decision on rotated BSP roofs(they are still in there but I replaced the worst ones) and I will have to fix all my roofs in an upcomming patch.
