Beefeater got a reaction from Sprony in So about the Features… (Site discussion)
Some background: I was first introduced to this site via Pericolos' procedural FPS thread. I was drawn in by this friendly little community, but stayed lurking for a long time. With the launch of the new site, though, I felt it was a good time to get involved
As a relatively new member, I can definitely say the redesign of the site was a “selling point” for me, the “Features” section and community features in particular. Spronyvan and Thrik have succeeded in bringing us some really informative and insightful content so far.
With that in mind, I’m a little disappointed that there haven't been any new articles in months. The “Features” section of this site has a lot of potential, but I fear it may not be getting enough attention at the moment.
I was looking into contributing articles myself, but to my surprise I couldn’t find any function within the site to submit user content. This is a bit of a bummer; why isn’t this integrated into the site already? I know, Thrik can probably help me via PM to get things published. I just found it weird this isn’t integrated.
So anyway, anyone else want more Features? Discuss!

Beefeater reacted to blackdog in Wolfenstein Returns?
Yes and no.
Yes, there's a good chunk of truth in the concept you can extrapolate from what he said, but he took it all out on a specific title. I don't think that was random, i mean, critics are always pointing their finger at modern shooters in the last few years, yet he takes on the only title that has been several years in hiatus, and which anyways offers a different setting.
And he's "disappointed" that people writes him and accuse him to be all bitter because his company close down... what was he expecting?
I dunno, it's simply the concept "we make only violent games" that is misplaced, he should know that, since the kind of titles he worked on. I think that this is just a bias because this kind of games get a lot of press, but i remember reading in the past that there are actually far more titles that are non-violent... we very well see at the mall that most boxes don't have an "M" on top of it, and the end global sales of non-violent games outsell shooters by great numbers.

Beefeater got a reaction from Thurnip in Should I buy Construct 2?
I share your concerns, which is why I wouldn't make a memory intensive game with this. I figure it should be great for making simple game "prototypes", like how Derek Yu made Spelunky in Game Maker.
I believe you can export to .exe now, it's just a WebKit wrapper though.
Also, I just missed the offer! That's what I get for assuming it would last the whole day, I guess:
Why even choose an arbitrary time like that? Jeez… Screw this, I'm waiting til the next offer

Beefeater reacted to Corwin in Should I buy Construct 2?
My opinion: use Unity. It's got a few add-ons (including free ones) to handle 2D workflows better, and knowing Unity in and out will certainly benefit your future more than knowing Construct 2.
That said, if you've figured out Construct 2 is EXACTLY what you need for that project, and don't mind learning it for maybe only that project, go wild!
At least that's the conclusion I reached, looking myself into 2D game prospects.

Beefeater reacted to Thrik in Call of Duty: Ghosts
I can appreciate your point, there are a lot of people out there who seem to think it's totally uncool to be into something that a lot of other people are into. There's probably some proper name for it, but I like to think of it as aversion to popularity. With these people it's a seriously uphill fight to convince them something is worth trying if they can see a lot of other people like it, very sad way to be.
I think with Call of Duty a lot of people are genuinely fatigued by it though, I know I am. Same for Assassin's Creed even though I have mostly really enjoyed those games. I guess some publishers have been experimenting with how much they can get away with releasing lots of sequels this generation. Of course there'll be a lot of people jumping on the 'fuck CoD' bandwagon...

Beefeater reacted to PaulH in Call of Duty: Ghosts
It means that in my opinion some people seem to have lost the capacity to just switch off and enjoy games as an entertainment medium instead of over-analyzing and critiquing them. There are people out there who will formulate opinions on a COD game solely based on it being a COD game, without playing it. I didn't think I made it that hard to understand.

Haha
Honestly though the day I stop looking forward to games that are legitimately enjoyable because I want to conform to the opinions of the negative online minority is the day I want to stop working in the industry. Enjoying games on a basic level is what many gaming fans online nowadays seem to forget they're supposed to be doing

I hate people like that cameraman in movies. Cloverfield, Paranormal Activity, this... Those fucking twats that won't turn off the damn camera and insist on filming everything while commentating with some smarmy remarks and laughter at their own hilarious camera behaviour.
"What? What's the big deal? It's fine it's fine! It's just a camera, it's not gonna kill you. Nobody cares, chill out!"
"Ok I'm turning it off, I'm turning it off! See, it's off..." /keeps filming
Do those people really exist in life? Well glad he got his torso blown off.

Beefeater reacted to Thrik in So about the Features… (Site discussion)
Small update, I've figured out a good way of allowing people to get involved with this a lot more easily — you'll be able to submit articles right via the forums. Will get this rolled out with a proper explanatory guide this weekend. This'll make it a lot easier for me to recruit people to write too as it'll be so much simpler.

Great to hear you enjoyed the features.
The roll-out last year was a little slow as the main priority was really on getting the forums converted to the new software; It was kind of a 'soft launch' in that things would ramp up as they're stabilised rather than operate at 100% from day one. I've actually still been spending a lot of my free time over the Christmas period sorting out continuing issues related to that in addition to the whole family/friends thing — so not much time to devote to organising writers and interviews.
What I can say is that two features are currently in the pipeline: an interview which I hope will be ready within a week, and a splendid technical article is on its way too. For the new year my 'MapCore resolution' was to get some momentum behind the features, so I've been working on getting some organised for the next few weeks and hopefully we can keep that going!
I did say in the 'new forums' announcements that anyone interested in contributing as a writer should get in touch with me, whether it's a one-off or regular gig. And that invite is still there! So if anyone wants to help out with this and provide content for everyone to enjoy — articles, tutorials, technical reviews, all welcome — send me a PM. If you did before and I haven't followed it up I apologise, I have more time for it now though.
I do acknowledge something needs implementing to make it more clear user content is totally welcomed and easy to submit so I'll work on that ASAP.
BTW thanks for pointing out the spam, I hadn't noticed that. Clearly need to bolster the guest posting anti-spam there.

Beefeater reacted to -HP- in Bioshock Infinite (Spoiler free thread)
I guess that's what he means Francois, why are you protecting it so much dude? research will always boil down to one thing: the stuff that sells the most, the stuff that appeals the most to the masses, the stuff that gets the biggest attention, etc, etc. That was the problem here, "over-research".
Since we all here know that Bioshock infinite wont just be a shooter, it wont be just a "ordinary" game, it will stand out among everything out there at the moment, and that cover just doesn't sell that fact. It will make the game blend with the others in the shelves.
I realize that that cover might appeal to those that don't know the IP because it embraces the genre that sells like hot cakes in our industry, the action packed first person shooters, and it's so obvious for us that cover is trying to get a slice of that market it feels wrong to us.
I just wish that instead of trying to blend in, it tried to be unique, which is the new "trend" I think and you start to see some really cool stuff out there that stands out. Want an example? Far Cry 3 awesome cover, featuring not the cool guy of the game but the vilan.
Which is EXACTLY what Bioshock 1 did too, Big Daddy on the cover with the city on the background.

Beefeater reacted to Thrik in Bioshock Infinite (Spoiler free thread)
A strange correlation has been drawn by some between 'sells well' and 'has no imagination whatsoever'. It's perfectly possible to produce an attractive cover that also draws in the mainstream. A generic cover isn't going to suddenly make the game fly off the shelves, people are more likely to respond to one that's genuinely beautiful rather than following a mantra of 'tits, sparks, guns' (or whatever formula is in play).

Beefeater reacted to PogoP in 'Paradise'
This is how I feel about the film. I WANT to enjoy it but I just can't help but pick holes in it. The bit where they are running away from the giant rolling ship makes me cringe each time....... Just...... Fuckin.... Step to the side......

Beefeater reacted to -HP- in 'Paradise'
Yeah, that link is awesome. Prometheus is a clusterfuck of bad storytelling, unless it all makes sense in the sequel, which would be pretty faggotish of them.
I've seen the movie twice already, and while some things made better sense the second time you see it, I still have no idea what some other things were all about, and I think I can call myself an Aliens nerd. Shit just doesn't add up.
I mean, they do answer a few things, and I actually really love how some plot elements are told to you by very indirect means, it makes you feel smart. But some stuff is just impossible to figure out.
And don't get me started on the characters. The Crew has no idea what their in for until they actually get there? Srsly? Also, the guy with all the nice maps and flying drones is the one who gets lost in the maze? He of all people?
Vickis death was so stupid I can't get my head around it.
Oh well... If you manage to ignore all the little stupid plot holes and just plain stupid writing, it IS one hell of a badass movie, or I think it is cos I really wanna like this movie

Beefeater got a reaction from -HP- in 'Paradise'
Prometheus was a disappointment on many levels for me.
As it turns out, a lot of the stupid nonsense made more sense in the original script, before Damon Lindelof (of Lost fame) fucked it up.
I still would've liked a different take on the space jockeys, but I can definitely see how the changes to the script ruined the execution.

Beefeater reacted to AlexM in Level Design Inspiration Photo Blog
Hey guys. I made a small blog which basically posts images that are inspirational for level design. Primarily real world stuff. Was originally just for me to collect and categorize images for myself but I though mapcore might be interested.
Japan urban areas are really dense and full of great shots for tight CS type levels. I have a lot of photos to go through.
If anyone else would like to contribute any images it would also be greatly appreciated. I try to guarantee at least one new image a day assuming I have the material.

Beefeater reacted to Pericolos0 in procedural FPS
thanks for the ideas guys . Yeah in editor solutions wouldnt work for me. I need something that can work in the game, and takes like 1 second max. A good thing though, is that all geometry is block based, so theres some possibility for a simplified lighting solution at some point
I said the game was feature complete, but decided to add in this anyways:
enemies now drop crystals when they die, and you can find larger crystals in certain locations (and secret spots!). There are now also item boxes that you can only pick up with the right ammount of crystals in the beginning of each level. This way you can buy ammo, guns and health. It's costly so you have to make decisions on what you buy . Also, I will create "save points" that allow you to start a new game from there. Save points will be VERY costly to buy .
