What the hell are you saying man? lmao, some of the best games I've played, ever, were made by Kojima.

If it's not your cup of tea, sure, just say so. But that's utterly not true.

Pretty much It also feels like the author designed this universe (or plot) from the bottom-up. It's kinda obvious that he/she came up with some "cool" ideas and then tried to shoehorn them in or made everything else adapt to those things rather than building something believable and seeing what you can do with that kind of universe. "Aw yeah, Harry potter sorting hat. Cool, I gotta have that. Hunger games is kinda cool, I'll use some of that stuff. Add a heroine that is struggling with some trials. Dayum, so much depth. I'll piece it together and BAM... masterpiece."

It's stuff you have to deal with a lot in level design when you have conflicting design ideas. For instance when someone says you NEED to have this exact thing happen in the level but you're struggling to make sense of it cos it doesn't fit in whatsoever although you admit that in itself it's quite a cool sequence. So you end up building everything around it to make sense of it and in the end it makes the whole thing worse cos you're scrapping or alternating your intro and outro sequences too much. I think he/she fell in love with some of the ideas/concepts but just isn't a strong enough writer to look at the big picture and glue it together or make sense of it... Basically not good at killing his/her darlings for the good of the whole.

/More rant xD I kinda wanna discuss bottom-up versus top-down design in video game design with you people now

Just finished Neuromancer, by far the hardest book I've ever read. Not per se as in difficult to understand but just hard in the way it is written, going through it takes a lot of time and attention from the reader (or at least me). Took me almost 3 months cos I could only read 10-20ish pages in a sitting.

    Now onto Dune!

I don't really have a substantial list, I was just talking to my art director about sci fi books some while back and he mentioned a couple so I've been going through those while also getting a second opinion through some lists online. But yeah basically I'm planning on going through these: Ender's Game, Neuromancer, Dune, Altered Carbon, Snow Crash. Reading them in that order for some reason  A close friend of mine is reading Hyperion but I wasn't interested in that, I forgot for what reason though but maybe it's something for you.

I've read Foundation about 10 years ago as well and from what I remember it was pretty good albeit a bit dated...

A lot of lists share the same books so I doubt you'll find one on there that is really bad, flavor might be a bit personal so in the end it might not become a favorite but I doubt you'd find one in there that really sucks. I mean, most of them had a big significance on popular media so they're worth reading for just that alone!

I pretty much did the same with fantasy books last year but got tired of the genre a bit, hence the switch to sci-fi, I'll probably get back to it though

The reason I used the avocado vs. snicker is it proves that certain calories have totally different properties than other calories, thus making "calories in vs. calories burned" not helpful at all. It's like talking about the weight of the food you eat, if you eat one pound of food that doesn't tell you anything about the meal itself or the effect it will have on your body.

500 calories of any two foods are going to be completely different in the macronutrient composition, so its much more helpful to talk about foods you're eating and food quality.

Here's some random fucking doctor talking about it first result I googled. It's pretty simple stuff.

    http://drhyman.com/blog/2014/04/10/calories-dont-matter/

"Take a class of sixth graders. Show them a picture of 1,000 calories of broccoli and 1,000 calories of soda. Ask them if they have the same effect on our bodies. Their unanimous response will be “NO!” We all intuitively know that equal caloric amounts of soda and broccoli can’t be the same nutritionally. But as Mark Twain said, “The problem with common sense is that it is not too common.”"

So as mentioned in the Buying a house and the games industry thread, I bought an old house and am currently renovating it. I took a year off for parental leave for when my second kid arrives, and some extra unpaid holidays before to try and get the house in a decent state before the birth.

Since I just got me an internet, I figured I'd post some updates as I go along, for the sake of it and because I won't have much game-related to show for a while. With all the moving, I forgot to take some early shots of the empty, untouched state of the house, so in some cases we already removed wallpaper and old furniture, but oh well...

Renovating is pretty fun in general, although sometimes you wish there wasn't so much to do, and I also had to call upon professionals for certain things like electricity and part of the water pipes work. There's been a few bad surprises (e.g. I thought I could live with the current electrical installation but after exposing part of it it became clear that it needed to be fully redone, or beams in the attic eaten by woodworms and thus having to redo the roof this summer) and a few good ones (e.g. finding massive wooden beams in a decent state under plaster). There's so many things I would look for now if I were to buy another house, it's crazy. I really had no idea how a house was made before, especially an old wooden traditional house like that with walls made of dirt + shit + straw and lots of small beams everywhere.

Just an overview: the house is in a small village in the middle of the german countryside, between Friedberg and Giessen. It's surrounded by fields, rolling hills and forest, which is pretty nice especially in the summer. Bit far from work, but you don't get bargains like that any closer to Frankfurt, and the train takes me to a station about 10min away from home so it's fine. The idea of buying was to stop wasting money on the rent, and if possible to make some profit by renovating and selling the house in the mid-term (like 5-6 years if all goes well, sooner if not). The purchase price was 59000 euro and with the notary/agency fees and such it was about 64000 total.

Also even though I did some handywork before with my uncles and my mom, I ain't no expert and am learning most of it on the fly, from websites, a couple books, and asking my family for advice. Being so far away from them means they can't come and help out much sadly, but at the same time I like going at my own pace and doing things my way, taking time to consider what to do with a room etc. so it's ok.

Anyways, here come a few posts of what I've done so far...
