AlexM reacted to Radix in [CS:GO] Shore
One of the projects I worked on after I made de_austria.
Yeah, I know the timing is really bad (CS2!), but can't change it... 🙁
In general a lot went wrong during this project. Had a lot of problems with the layout, but I think I found a good compromise in the end. Also learned many new things. Maybe I would even be ready to create a really good map now after all, but I think that it's gonna be the final one. I really like making maps, but it has become too time consuming over the years for just being a hobby. Unfortunately I never managed to get a job in the games industry. So that's it. I hope it's a worthy ending of 20 years of making maps for me. 🙂
Shore is a bomb defusal map for CS:GO that takes place on Lofoten Islands, Norway. (Also have a Hostage version of this that works well imo)

I took some inspiration from this place in Norway:

AlexM reacted to ZZZ in Malevolence, my first time trying to break down a level to learn level design
I've never done a level with a floorplan. I tried before, but neve finished it. I though to myself "Why not pick up an existing level?". The plan is to blockout in UE5 and then run some design analysis about item placement, flow, etc. The idea is to not focus on visuals, env art.
The purpose of this work it to have a blockout level in my portfolio with comments. I decided to pick up an existing map to skip the "I want an original idea". This is a very small map to make it easier.
My portfolio already includes levels but none have a blockout and they are all more visually pleasing than focusing on design, which is what I wanted to do.
The floorplan

AlexM reacted to Harry Godden in personal skate game project
it varies a lot these days, since theres are many different forward clustering methods. mine specifically does not effect draw calls:
renderdoc shows a few dozen drawelements on the left, to draw the world from one view (somewhere amongst them theres a switch between two vertex buffers).
my lights are stored as a global array per world in a texture buffer, and the spacial index is the 3d texture on input 4. the reason for the limit of 1000 lights is that those indices are 10 bits. the textures are calculated on the CPU because i'm not that high tech yet. so the result is that the pixel shader can look up by himself what lights it needs to shade with, which allows render big massive chunks of the world at once and not really have to worry about draw calls or culling far away lights

i added some lights to the engine and im pretty happy with how it turned out. can run up to 1000 point/spot lights at once. the clusters (since its forward render) are on a big cube grid like this (showing complexity, maximum per cube is 6):
and the result is
also wrote a new skybox shader which is dynamic

AlexM reacted to WD in What have you purchased recently?
It’s really frigging sweet. In movies it’s not so much of a difference. I’ve seen few blurays but I couldn’t tell the difference. But in games it really makes the image pop when used with proper tone mapping. It took me few months before I realized to turn off the horrible TV default HDR setting and use HGiG mode. I recommend looking that up. I just wish HDR were implemented in games more often. Playstation should have the XBox equivalent auto HDR feature so that we could play older titles with deeper colors.
Ghost Of Tshusima especially has some of the best HDR I’ve seen so far.

AlexM reacted to kleinluka in RIP Zach Ford (1985-2022)
I just learned one of our original members, Zach Ford @Zaford20 aka “von ferret” has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 36.
For those of you who don’t know him, Zach was one of the original members of Mapcore. Working at Gearbox for most of his career he worked on (among others) Borderlands and more recently PUBG as a Level and Game Designer.
I have so many good memories with Zach, wasting fools in BF2 every night while teaming up in the attack helicopter, playing frisbee in a park in Savannah during a thunderstorm, long conversations about life…
RIP buddy. You will be missed.

AlexM reacted to NOUG4AT in They Hunger: Source
Port of "They Hunger" to the newer Source Engine. There would be graphical, physical and general enhancements of the gameplay and it would still save that "dark" and "bloody" atmosphere of They Hunger.
Try the latest build and see many interesting changes compared to the original.

AlexM reacted to NOUG4AT in MISTAKE: Source
Port of original 2007 gold-source based Half-Life 1 modification. There would be graphical, physical and general enhancements of the gameplay and it would still save that "horror" atmosphere of the mod.
What features await you in ported version:
+First of all, slightly improved textures. I will not include "upscaling" textures in the release. I will make it a separate addon as not everyone likes it (use modified textures).
+Changed lighting in some places. (I'll try to make it true to the original, however I can't guarantee the same experience, the game might feel a little different)
+Chapter System
There are also bugs that will be fixed:
-Possible bugs with v_models of weapons
The main goal of this port is to try to take advantage of the new engine.
If you find a "mistake", please let me know

AlexM reacted to PaulH in Recruiting Level Designers for Fable (Playground Games)
Hey everyone
I'm on the lookout for level designers to join my team over at Playground Games in the UK, working on Fable! We have two positions open currently:
Level Designer (Contract) - https://playground-games.com/careers/otPGlfw3/

Both job postings mention that prior industry experience is required, however if you have an awesome portfolio, I'd still love to see it!
Cheers,

AlexM reacted to Dea in Portfolio Feedback Session
Hello!
I am working as a Level Design Teacher at The Game Assembly in Stockholm, Sweden. It’s a trade school where artists, programmers and level designers have individual discipline courses and game projects together for two years and then go out on an 8 month internship. We often brag that the Swedish game industry is currently 10% The Game Assembly Alumni. 😁
Our 14 Second-Year Level Design students are currently working on their portfolios that they’ll use to apply to internships with. They would really value some feedback from folks that are working in the industry.
So I was wondering if any Level Designers that are working in the industry would be interested in joining a Discord feedback session some time in March?
Let me know if you or anyone that you know could be interested! (We are sadly not allowed to pay anything though. 🥲 Hopefully it could still benefit all parties though as you get a first look on the coming talent.😉 )

Not for me, but I noticed Geoffrey Smith is still listed at Respawn. He's been the Multiplayer Design Director at Infinity Ward for a bit now, who also hired fellow Mapcore user Randy "Kokopelli" Chunga last year as an LD for IW on MW2.

AlexM reacted to ZZZ in What have you cooked recently
I've learned something with cooking that rice. Previously I would cook the vegetables with some water because carrots are hard and they need cooking to become soft. But if you do that with onions and belly pepper it ruins the flavour. It's best to use olive oil and start cooking without adding any water. Onions, belly pepper and frozen vegetables already contain lots of water and I cook until all that water evaporates and you start hearing that frying sound.
That same recipe tastes great with mushrooms, specially shiitake. Pout pepper is great too.

AlexM got a reaction from blackdog in What have you cooked recently
I'm not involved in this dish but my family lives on a small island and we have a friend there with 3 smokers. He gave me some bacon that he made himself in the smokers.
My partner then made ramen noddles using the bacon and some noodles & seaweed she got from Japan. It was phenomenal.
