I'm not saying you shouldn't be able to crank up graphics, game options in general are relevant and perhaps the least problematic overhead. I think the bigger culprits are long tutorial sessions and missing transparency (e.g. game loading not showing). I was also briefly thinking about how games could begin with cold openings as well - like they do in movies/tv series where you get a piece of drama before the title slams in. In this way you get some action immediately and afterwards you could transfer to a title/menu screen.
My main point with this thread was to see what people think about these things and how to potentially combat them.

Now I get that I'm probably extremely hard to please when it comes to XCOM/UFO and I really wanna wait until they've actually shown it off properly, but as a first reaction then this direction looks really unappealing. I always loved the entire setup of you having to defend earth in a somewhat contemporary setting, and changing it for some covert ops future setting with the aliens having taken over earth is just so far away from that that it looks like a completely different game, tho I totally get the tricky situation of having to make a sequel to XCOM that doesn't just feel like a reskin (tho doing the same game again with more locations and procedural levels would be fine for me, lols)

Anyway, I'm an old idiot who is way too nostalgic about the original XCOM, so I should probably just calm down for now

Those screenshots really don't look too hot either, tho procedural levels sound nice

Are you saying they are too distracting or your worried about people getting stuck on them? Doesn't look all that troubling to me?

I guess it is a little rude of me just to tell you not to make a map, instead of being more constructive. - And for that reason I will in fact head over to Nonameyet and see if I have something to add.

But my point still remains, and trust me I speak from experience, when you get stuck on a map, your first response will often be to quit it or postpone it, to work on something else, because then you can immediately get some work done and obviously when you just start off a map you're going to get what seems to be a lot of work done very quickly which is super satisfying, rather than sitting down trying to fix a problem filled project that you started a while back, which in turn, requires a boat load of work to accomplish what might just look like a tiny portion.

But as I mentioned in my previous post, this is what mapping is; essentially you're creating you're own problems over and over again, and fixing them over and over again, to accomplish a final product that you can be proud of.
And the part about creating problems is inevitable, trust me, no one sits down and creates a perfect map without running into complications.

So if you quit, every time you run into these problems and complications, you're never going to finish anything.

What you should really take away from this is to make sure to carefully select your project, what theme are you going for? what lay-out would you find interesting to work on? and this is not just about seeing Skybex's cs_cruise and going: "I want to make a boat map!", because you're super enthusiastic about boats right now. Of course take notes from maps you like, but really sit down and think about why you like a certain map, and think about how you want your map to use these inspirations. But this is really about finding out what YOU would like to create.

Once you have chosen that, and that can take a long time, several weeks even, then you can sit down and begin your project, and then it's all about staying strong with that project, even when you hit roadblocks, complications, problems whatever you want to call them, you know that this is what you really want to create, and that should motivate you to keep going.

Of course, it's not like you're not allowed to make something different or try out something for another concept, but make sure that your mind is still focused on that main project of yours because you've chosen that for a good reason, it's what you really want.

Super sorry for the wall of text, but when I just started mapping a long time ago for StarCraft maps, I had the exact same problem and I "mapped" for 3 yrs without ever really finishing something I was proud of, and that is such a defeating feeling to me, so use my advice as you please, but know that I'm only saying this to spare you of what I've felt myself.

    Good luck.

I almost feel sorry for the people who have to make this shit. I don't know even know if it's possible to reboot these things successfully. I'd probably just burn down the sets and leak the scripts mid way through production or something.

at least it makes for fun arguments with people who do this since there's that point in the conversation where you reach with them where they can't really say much more because they have no idea what they're talking about and it's glorious and one of those small things I live for.

The Last of Us is a better designed game but what I'm saying is structurally they are no different, length aside. Which is what people are primarily taking aim at. Cutscene interruption, QTE's, walk and talk sequences, all of these guide both games through their narrative between the core gameplay segments. It just seems every now and then a game has to be taken to task and it's unfortunate because it means people are basically selective and inconsistent about what they like and when.

As for the cover combat and QTE implementation specifically I'm not sure either is done poorly relative to other games. The shooting mechanics are actually pretty refined, if mostly standard. Solid weapon feedback and enemy hit reacts. AI move around the environments nicely and create some decent combat situations. The location specific dialogue call outs are always a nice touch. QTE's are what they are, not sure how they're particularly bad here.

If you're going to shit on The Order as 'all the things wrong with the industry' then you need to revisit some previously acclaimed titles. They are no different from each other.

I have the exact same feeling with this as I do with the new Star Wars movie; it'll simply have to be able to stand on it's own, because just being an Alien movie isn't enough at this point (Alien is one of my favourite movies ever and I love Aliens, but this franchise is seriously tainted at this point).

The stuff he posted on Instagram a while back looked awful IMO. The idea of basically disowning Alien3 from the franchise could be interesting, but honestly then I'd much rather see a new cast and some new ideas for the franchise.
