  1. I guess it's just my fear of phototextures being too photo-like. Anyway, post some wip ingame stuff as soon as you are ready to show-off
  2. ...nothing
  3. Indeed the Unreal 3 engine is amazing and also this demo was quite nice, but not mind-blowing at all. 1. The objects are very repetitive. For example you see the garbage decal on the road about 5 times. 2. None of the props actually cast a shadow except the buggy. 3. Did you see the ground texture after the buggy left the park? Too many tiles. 4. When the buggy drives down stairs the props suddenly pop up. No LOD, no fading but a very small draw distance. Of course I'm a bit fussy and the general impression of the demo is great. But it shows me 2 things: First, the designers of that demo must have been a bit lazy. Of course it's a demo but even then it could be a bit better designed. Second thing is, that it looks like the Unreal3 engine can't handle so many polygons as I thought it could do. Once again I learn not to trust in early "screenshots". But as I said, the Unreal3 engine is still very stunning.
  4. Looks fantastic! But somehow such textures in-game never look like they're supposed to do. I can't explain it, it's just a feeling
  5. Yes I knew that. But who cares about Stalingrad, D-Day rulzz!!!111
  6. I like the idea of making huge maps with streaming them in the background.
  7. We need more wars on this planet! Actually there were enough wars that could be used in games, e.g. the Korean War, the Bosnian War, many wars in Afrika as well as in South Amerika and last but not least, the war in Iraq. Well, I guess the reason why so many developers prefer WWII is simply because the second part of the war (when the USA came into play) is being considered by most people for a "good" war, because it was all about kicking Hitler's ass and that can't be a bad thing. Other wars are more controversial, that's probably the reason why many game companies want to stay politcally correct and choose a "good war" for their games.
  8. I totaly agree with everything. Especially this everyone-makes-Spacemarines-thing is absolutly true! I mean, there are so many Stargate-, Starwars-, Startrek-, Starship Troopers-, etc Mods out there and I wonder how can people just waste their talent for remaking stuff that already someone has made. And it's illegal.
  9. I agree. I don't wanna see any "I-know-how-the-"make hollow"-tool-in-hammer-works-maps".
  10. SimKonzentrationslager
  11. Don' get me wrong, Company of Heroes and The Outfit look very nice and Relic is a damn cool company (I just love Homeworld), but I'm getting really, really, really sick of WWII games. An why do they produce two of them? Must be boring for a designer to create the 100th sherman tank and the 101th french farmhouse.
  12. I'm not sure if the abilities of Max and those of Maya are so different. Of course the interface is a bit different and there are some things that Maya can do better (e.g. UV-mapping) and vice versa. If you want to do a radical change, try out Lightwave, Rhino or Cinema 4D. I'm not sure but I guess there are some varieties. Don't flame me if I was wrong, the only program I really do know is Max. I use it in combination with ZBrush for doing organic stuff and cool normal maps. That's all I need /anyway it's always useful to learn Maya. It has become more and more popular in the game, film and gfx industry.
  13. BF2 is only funny when you're not playing with morons. And that's rare on the public servers.
  14. Come on guys, there are a lot of other maps out there that look like crap. Just check out the hl2world forums...
  15. Yes it's always the same truck model with diffrent skin. I hope they're going to replace them.
  16. A new movie is out. http://www.alanwake.com/movies.html The game looks fantastic and the story seems to be very interesting. / I just noticed that the level of detail system doesn't work so well. The trees get kinda darker when coming near and this looks strange. (yeah, yeah I know but hey, here at mapcore we may criticise such little things )
  17. I guess the workflow of creating faces and stuff must be rather bad in Max. I would use ZBrush or maybe take a Poser model as reference. I don't know, never done any organic stuff before. What techniques/programs do you guys use for creating such stuff?
  18. Such a bad remake! If I were 3D Mike, I would be kinda pissed.
  19. Eclipse doesn't almost use any specular or normal maps. The bad performance is because of the huge amout of alphas (all the grass and stuff), the lack of level-of-detail and because of the bad vis optimizing. I think HL2 (and CSS, HL2:Dm) uses more specular maps than most of any other games. I don't get the point why normal maps are only good for props. They also look good when used as a world texture. Just because walls aren't moving (unlike charakters and props) it doesn't mean that normal maps are useless.
  20. Yes that's sure. But I thought a company like gearbox can manage all the stuff that is necassary to get a working visa.
  21. Unfortunately Max is my man. I've never got along with XSI.
  22. Isn't gearbox able to get a visa for people from outside the USA?
  23. I've just finished Eclipse. First thing I noticed was the terrible performance. In the first level I had about 15fps and my computer isn't that slow. I guess it's because the source engine has some trouble handling too many alpha transparency But the graphics, especially in the first level, look very nice. The map design as well as the model design is great! What I didn't like was the animation of the characters but for amateur project it's ok. Also the textures are a bit blurry and I almost didn't see any specular or normal maps. But I guess if they have used better textures, the performance would have been even worse.
  24. sometimes when I go somewhere I just take the camera with me, just in case of finding something I could use as a texture. kinda nerdy I guess
