Like Chris said, the distortion's really noticeable, and i don't like it. A lo-fi sound only works well (i think) for indierock songs and stuff like that. With classicalish music it just sounds weird. As for the song itself, it's a good start and i guess it'd work well for intros but i did find it a bit boring. Not enough variation (chords seem to stay the same). What i do when i compose songs like this and i want to keep some pianoriff going is change the bass every other (couple of) measure(s), it's an easy way of keeping your audience interested, you can lift tunes up and take the atmosphere down and all. I put something together quickly to show what i mean (link at the bottom). Besides that i always add something offbeat to the percussion to put accents (in the example track, right before the bass lifts the song up). If i'd work out this song i would keep the cymbals going after that i guess. Finally, the piano that comes in at times seems kind of random, but then again, it might work really well combined with the actual intro/ title and you'd probably have to rewrite some parts to fit it anyway. I do like the string section. One idea i got when listening to it is that it might be cool to alter the staccato way of playing with a more fluent way, like Beck did when covering Suzanne with his record club (link at the bottom as well). Oh and finally finally, welcome to mapcore! While this is mainly a mapping forum, every decent game needs some music at some point so your expertise comes in handy i bet. There's some good musicians around (Kleinluka for example) so you're bound to get some useful feedback. 1) *Soundcloud just won't let me upload anything and it's nice weather so i gave up. I can email it to you if you want, or if someone else wants to upload is somewhere i can email it to them. Just let me know. 2) http://www.mixedgrill.nl/2009/09/04/dee ... cord-club/

Then of course there's a huge difference between 'that's a good idea' and 'obligatory'

If you throw and oldschool HL1 competition even I will start up ye olde Hammer again. Maybe it's an idea to limit the challenge to old HL1 material only (skylines, textures, models)? No custom material

a few months ago i played (and danced haha) in a music video

Just read it, and ("I'm surprised anyone is granting it any credibility at all.") feel a bit gullible even though i had my doubts. Wanting to believe is a strong force within anyone eh? Still, even though the guy who wrote the article you're referring to sounds pretty credible it's one man's word against the others, so i guess i'll hold still for a while and wait until this settles down. I do hope however the credible-sounding guy turns out to be some kind of internet troll and this is genuine

I love it! The plants look really out of place though

http://news.yahoo.com/s/digitaltrends/n ... falienlife http://journalofcosmology.com/Life100.html Extremely awesome. It'll probably still take ages until we ever find a single live alien, but i can't wait to put this in the face of some fundamentalists

That's actually a very good point man! One of the many reasons people play games is to cheer up and feel good, and dark, foggy or rainy environments don't really help with that. that's probably why zombie games or games in which people have to kill other people aren't popular?

hehe I'd need to paint it all in one go then . But I saved all the steps for this one so I can make a GIF Peris. Tonight (yes, insomnia, whatever), i've looked through this entire thread and i think i like this one the best, because what you've done so far is draw characters, a corridor (which is pretty limited), robots, and so on. This is the only piece that i can kind of imagine some people would be able to base an entire game on. Only in this drawing you put an entirely new atmosphere on paper. I think if you take this concept art thing seriously you should do this more often. There will always be people who are better at drawing characters within a game, or robots, or weapons or whatever, but as a level designer (and i don't mean just the layout but especially the visuals) your strenght is coming up with an atmosphere, so i think you should do these kind of things more often. If only because it's really cool to see what other people come up with, even if it leads to nothing.

Maybe remove that glowing sunrise / sunset altogether. Put your thumb over it and look I like the colors better and it'd also solve the problem of too many things to look at in one picture (which unfortunately makes sure nobody is really looking at anything in particular)
-
I don't have the game, but i am a musician, so, if you post the song separately, i'll at least give you feedback on that.
-
That makes me curious about the concept art. Are you at liberty to post it here? I guess some big structure can work but right now it makes the treeline look weird (what the hell is going on there, upside down treeline?) and if you want to include it you'd need to scrap something else. Right now it's 10 postcards in one

I like the new colors, more contrast fits UT as well. What still bugs me though, is the seemingly random displacement of the bushes. I guess it'd make sense to have more around the water for example. When i was working on de_ritual2 back in the days, i really wanted to built the Angkor Wat tree (link below), which wasn't really possible back then but i still think something like that could make a visually great feature and it would also provide some kind of orientation http://ohhplanet.com/cambodia/angkor%20 ... a%2011.jpg

i think changing them into a few moons would help, but i'd prefer to see only one or maybe two. this is too much and it does take the attention away, right now there's a bit of a lack of a composition in my opinion. and what is that big black thing growing out of the mountains on the right? i don't get it...
-
Uh, yeah, that's what i ment, the two sound familiar so yeah uh

do you usually draw from photos? because, it's a cliche as much as it is true, that will not teach you drawing, because the conversion from 3d to 2d has already been done for you
