  1. That moment, when you became a gamer; when you "got it" for the first time. What game was it for you? For me it was the Gauntlet arcade maching from Atari. That's when I fell in love, and I have never looked back.
  2. Come on von*ferret, now you are just giving all of us WoW addicts a guilty conscience. But you are right though, gotta know games to make them, but sometimes making them can be a lot more fun than playing them. Photoshop is my comfortable home planet, with 3ds Max being a recent addition to my solar system.
  3. Getting Half Life 2 kinda introduced this thought of "when can I play it next?" to my life. Haven't been that involved in a story in a game since playing Icewind Dale. This summer was lost to World of Warcraft, when I should have been learning ZBrush and Maya. I am not gonna renew my subscription now, since my masters degree is coming up. That would just spell disaster. But a lot of older games still have this magic to this day, where you know if you start a game, it is gonna be 4 in the morning very soon. The kings are still Civilization, Alpha Centauri, Pirates! and Heroes of Might and Magic III. Actually that Sid Meier really masters that style of "just one more turn" games design... Other than that, the Age of Empires/Mythology games probably own entire years of my life...
  4. I DID see that movie. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks and some weird story of why they should fall in love. But that scene, where this is supposed to be ripped off from? Nah... That kind of interior wasn't in the movie at all. As far as I remember...
  5. If that was for me, then thanks a lot!
  6. I think people are scared to apply. I mean, it is a job we all want, but most of us will be thinking, no way am I good enough for this. Don't wanna look like a fool. So... I think it is mostly psychological...
  7. Well, learning styles differ immensely. I have always had a close relationship with books, and have had the good fortune to know a fair amount of excellent Max books, for different levels of competence I can recommend 3ds Max Fundamentals (absolute beginners), Modelling a Character with 3ds Max (intermediate), 3ds Max Killer Tips (intermediate) and The 3ds Max Bible (good for reference). There are more still. Anyway, I guess I just like better sitting with a book, instead of reading from a screen...
  8. That would be nice. It just seems that Gnomon is first and foremost highend film/TV stuff, and then perhaps a distant second - games.
  9. Okay, I have heard of that super deluxe edition. But you are saying those videos are just the Buzz videos?
  10. Hi gang, For my masters course we'll be using the Unreal engine for a games development project. Last year I think they used Renderware. Anyway, I am happy to finally get a task to push me in that direction, since there are a lot of interesting companies (Bioware among others) who use it. I am not so much the dive in without manual kinda learner, I like working through a few tutorials, and learning the basics through that, and then start fiddling around. I was thinking of getting this book, I believe it is published by the 3D Buzz guys... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0672326922/qid=1125488628/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-5326722-1614460?v=glance&s=books Anybody have any experience with it? Are there tutorial videos out there? Anybody have any experience with Unreal editing at all? This will be my first FPS level editor to tamper with, so it is both daunting and exciting.
  11. Do anybody here have any clues about the HL-Nightwatch recent relaunch? I know a few Mapcoreans have been Nightwatchers in the past, and perhaps still are. What's up with Nightwatch? I joined a good while ago to make textures, because I thought the mod had promise, pace and direction. Then all went quiet. Now I rejoined the other day. Let's see...
  12. Kinda makes you look good, doesn't it?
  13. Yeah, nothing new for you Cap1. But I don't think I have had it crit'ed here at Mapcore before...
  14. Glad someone noticed at last! Sounds like you have known it for some time? Do I know you?
  15. Hmm. The idea with the many different sub areas was so you could easily find exactly what you were after, and only that. I guess that is not working out right. I did consider to use more colours like a traditional periodic table, but I think the strength of the design is its simplicity, hence the drama and high contrast of only, red, black and white... The font I use everywhere is either Hattenschweiler or Impact, for consistency. But I have heard people complain about that font more than once, particularly if they don't have it installed. Perhaps a change is in order...
  16. Whoops. Well, the site is designed to run optimally on Internet Explorer. There are some of the roll overs I just can't get to work right in Firefox. AS for your suggestion, thanks. But don't you think that the spatial set up kind of underlines that these groups are different categories. At least that was the idea...
  17. Any ideas of how I could make it less disorienting without loosing the style?
  18. Any crits and comments would be welcome! The contents are a bit old, but I am more interested in your opinions on the site design and layout... http://www.marquepierre.com/index.html Fire away!
  19. Looks great Minotauro. Why the Portuguese titles? Are there really that many games companies in Brazil? Switch to all English I say...
  20. Interesting perspective Zacker... I remember when I first told an industry insider that I wanted to be the best texture artist in the world in 2010. He was amazed, because he had NEVER heard of anybody growing up wanting to be a texture artist... Another story, from my lecturer in texturing at university. She told of one of her former colleagues who was crap, with her words, but he went to work for Rockstar North, and they were raving over his work, which really made her appreciate how desperate they must be for solid texture artists. Anyway, that just underlines that we need dedicated ressources and knowledge sharing for texture artists all the more!
  21. It IS being built as we speak. Watch this space...
  22. Guys, it is not so much about having all exclusive bragging rights, because you are a texturing artist. A little more recognition for the massive work we do, would be nice. But at the end of the day, these are just symptoms showing how the world views us (the guys who takes a photo and maps it on a wall - how hard can that be?) and the place we have in the greater pecking order of CGI and games. Yes, they cannot live without us, we all know that, I hope the art directors, games designers and studio heads also consider that from time to time. And I do feel our worth is not completely reflected in paychecks, PR and general respect. But I just want a place to call our own. I want a place where all walks of texture artists can meet, learn and grow together. A place where you can go absolutely crazy discussing techniques for building a tiling hand painted texture from the bottom up, the best blend modes for rust on metal or what ever... Yes, I can do that at CGTalk, Mapcore or 3D Total, but you DO have to sift through a lot of irrellevant stuff before you find the real gems, because you share those places with soooo many other kinds of artists... Take the animators for example. You got animation mentor, the 10 seconds club, CG Char, AWN and many more. Explicitly dedicated to just character animation work. I just want a fraction of that, for the benefit of everybody... BTW, nice work ReNo. Gritty Doom/HL and cartoony art is not the only styles we can do. It is always nice to see someone with balls enough to try something new and different!
  23. What are you kidding me? We were buddies in university... Still are! Watch that kid, he's got drive, direction and determination...
  24. Kosmo: Well, obviously my posts were a tad propagandistic, but you should be able to see through that, and there is also great truths to be found in the surreal, particularly for a jedi such as yourself. At any rate, if you think what I am saying is the biggest load of bull shit you have heard today, then you must have had an absolutely stellar day today, and besides you are of course entitled to your opinion. Do anybody else have any opinions and points of view relating to the original topic?
  25. Kosmo, it is not the name here. See beyond that. Look at what Klein is saying...
