Sony has been trying to strongarm its proprietary media formats into widespread use at least since Betamax... they still haven't managed to do it, have they? *ed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony#Proprietary_formats So they did win out with 3.5" floppies and their joint effort with Philips, the DVD.

Just played through PoP: The Two Thrones. I loved the first two games, the first one for the acrobatics and the second one for expanding on that and fixing the combat... but somehow this one just doesn't feel as tight as Warrior Within. It didn't look as good as I expected it to either, I mean as an example the most important weapon in the game, the dagger of time that you have the entire way through, it's literally one polygon with an alpha outline - come on. It's bugggy as high hell too - mostly stable (only crashed to desktop once!) but really glitchy all over the place. Altogether it just felt pretty farmed-out, a trailing edge for the series rather than a big bang finale. Still, I had fun and it's worth playing. The last boss was really fucking hard too, it's been a long time since a game owned me that bad.

Sorry dude, I know what you're getting at but it's still another ww2 mod :/ It's not the specific factions, uniforms or timeframe involved - it's the setting, era, and technology. Please add giant Nazi robots, I'll be very interested Anyway you've got good people and a solid start, best of luck.

I think it's a bunch of hooey and another mistake by Lucas. Real time graphics are indeed getting pretty nice but they will never catch up with prerendered tech - the latter simply has the time advantage over the other and no matter how fast games get, prerendered effects will be a few steps ahead. I can see NO way that game graphic technology can benefit film effects, and the way prerendered models are built they're basically useless to efficiency-minded game developers. I'm curious to know how exactly their compounded workflows will be laid out and managed; I'm thinking it will wind up being a bigger headache for everybody involved, against pretty marginal gains. But then, this is a bunch of speculation and only the guys on the ground know how it's working out (wouldn't it be nice to hear their opinion, I bet it differs from this feel-good press release).

Which doesn't make it right. Of course it's the right way to go. When a level is broken down into many files, many people can work on it at once and the job of the level assembler is diminished, made much less of a bottleneck. It enables things like LOD which would be insanely more complex if the entire level was modeled at once. Modularity is the only way we can manage modern day poly budgets.

lol. Well what I mean is, they have appeal beyond the usual circle of metal fanatics - in fact most metal people I talk to just don't like them, but many other people I've introduced to them have really gotten into it. I never liked a metal song in my life until I heard DragonForce, so if they sound bad to your refined metal tastes maybe they're doing something right for some of the rest of us. Not everyone would admit to liking such cheeseball music but some confluence of total over-the-top epic scale, awesome technical skill and covert geekery, whatever but I can't get enough of em. Even better, they're playing LA during E3 ^^

Either you get DragonForce or you don't, but someday they will rule the world

Hourences it sounds like you're deeply frustrated by the people you work with... maybe time to circulate the ol' resume

Well I haven't taken any good pictures of my work, but they've been doing some serious renovation and over the weekend they had a helicopter come in to lift some equipment onto the roof... I wasn't there but one of the guys took pictures: Our office is nestled in the foothills on the way to Skywalker Ranch, it's not terribly swank but I have a lovely view of an oak-strewn meadow and we have wild turkeys and plenty of deer on the back hill so it's pretty kewl IMO.
